MCAGCC — Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center on Tuesday, June 16, to observe training and speak with Marines, sailors and civilians conducting and taking part in pre-deployment training.

Mullen and his group arrived here and began their day speaking with the Combat Center’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal section and representatives from the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization.

As temperatures climbed into triple-digits, the tour continued into the training area where Tactical Training Exercise Control Group staff instructed Marines and sailors from 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, and Combat Logistics Battalion 5 undergoing “Mojave Viper” - the Marine Corps’ pinnacle pre-deployment exercise.

In addition to the live training, the chairman was able to observe virtual training in the form of computer simulators - the Virtual Combat Convoy Trainer, the HMMWV Egress Assistance Trainer and the USMC Operator Driver Simulator (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle Variant) - and speak with the Marines and civilians who use them to instruct deploying units on how to operate tactical vehicles in a combat environment without actually having to put them behind the wheel.

Mullen spent the last few minutes of his tour speaking with members of the Advisor Training Group who train Marines and sailors to become trainers and advisors themselves once they deploy and begin working with police and soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Four Marines, whose job was to train, mentor and advise the Afghanistan National Police, were killed in Afghanistan in combat on Saturday, June 14. They were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.
