GAO: More BRAC information, aid needed

BALTIMORE — A new federal report says more information and aid is needed to help communities deal with military base realignment.
The report was prepared by Congress’s watchdog arm, the Government Accountability Office. The GAO report says the Pentagon and other agencies have provided some funding and other aid, but the issue has not received the needed “high-level leadership.”
The report says the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County, Fort Meade in Anne Arundel County and Bethesda National Naval Medical Center in Montgomery County are among 20 bases nationwide that the Defense Department expects will be seriously affected by realignment.
Traffic congestion, inadequate schools and a shortage of affordable housing in the surrounding communities are among the top concerns.
