GREEN — Flag Day was marked in Summit County June 14 with a service conducted by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office at the Robert D. Campbell Training Center. The event featured a ceremonial retirement of American flags that are no longer suitable for service.

Taking part in the event were the Akron Police Department Honor Guard, Summit County Sheriff’s Honor Guard and Mounted Patrol Unit and Group III Civil Air Patrol Squadron, as well as the Chesty Puller Young Marines.

Shown at right top is Quinn Braun, 12, of Bath, a member of the Chesty Puller Young Marines, as he stands behind a table of flags to be retired as Col. Joseph Sheehan, of the U.S. Marine Reserves, addresses the crowd.

The event also included taking a ceremonial flag down, shown above, as a member of the Sheriff’s Honor Guard salutes. The flag was then the first to be lit on fire, the preferred way to dispose of worn flags, shown at right bottom.

Participants then proceeded to place other flags collected from around the county on several fires, as shown at right middle.

During the event, organizers asked that attendees maintain a respectful silence as the flags were retired. Summit County Sheriff Drew Alexander’s Office reported that several hundred flags were retired at the ceremony.
