To Kadena airman, White Castle burger is worth extra leave

A good burger is hard to find.

At least that’s the excuse Air Force Staff Sgt. Aaron Kay gave a newspaper Monday when he told them he was extending his stay in Michigan for a week.

You see, a new White Castle was slated to open the day after he was to end his visit with family in Howell, and Kay, a loadmaster with the 353rd Special Operations Group at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa, hadn’t had a White Castle burger in 14 years — ever since he joined the Air Force.

Kay was named the "No. 1 White Castle Fan" by his local paper, the Livingston Daily Press & Argus, beating out a woman who claimed she ate enough White Castle burgers in one sitting to induce labor and a man who said he once ate 27 burgers to win a bet.

According to the newspaper, Kay, 34, decided to hang around Howell when he drove by the new hamburger joint and realized he would miss the opening.

"I was kind of heartbroken," he told a reporter, explaining that there was nothing to compare with a White Castle burger on Okinawa. "There’s something about the way they taste."

Howell told the newspaper he got hooked on White Castle hamburgers while growing up in small Michigan towns.

When he worked as a roofer in Detroit one summer, he scarfed burgers at a White Castle two to three times a week, he said.

So, Kay had a solution to his dilemma. He called his superior officer and asked for and was granted a week’s extension, according to the local paper.

He was in line when the White Castle opened.
