I had a few questions regarding my MOS school. I'm going in as 63/64xx. My recruiter told me it was a year of training, then I would actually begin my actual 4 year enlistment, which doesn't really matter to me, gives me more time in the corps to learn.

Anyways, there was just a couple things I was wondering that my recruiter said he didn't know for sure.

One: Am I allowed to have a car while in training? He told me it depends on the length of your school, his was 3 months and he said he was allowed to have one, but could only drive like on the weekends. I was told I would be going to Pensacola for sure, then somewhere else for my actual aircraft specialty.

Two: What are the rules regarding promotion while someone is in MOS training? One of the recruiters said that the top person in the class usually gets a promotion, but what about while in training? I'm trying to go in as a PFC to get ahead. I was wondering that since my MOS school is so long, am I eligible for promotion while I'm in training, or because I'm in training that I'm not?

To answer your question about your promotion.. Since you are going in as a PFC you will get promoted to LCpl after 9 months.

Haveing a car is up to your school SOP, so check with the company Clerk or 1st Sgt when you get there or call them before you leave home. Some schools are extremely long and students are allowed to park on base, and some are not allowed on base, so you'd have to pay for parking during the day or be dropped off by the wife, if you're married!

Promotions up to Corporal are pretty much Time in Grade and Time in service, ie, if you make PFC outta Boot Camp, then 9 months later you'll make L/Cpl and so on up to Corporal, while on student status! I know a lot of Corporals that are still in school, or just finished and pick it up at their first PCS!

Your Time in service starts the day you report to Boot Camp, not after you graduate, not after MOS School, for promotional purposes to L/Cpl or even Corporal if the school is long enough!

My advice...learn everything you can about the Corps and leadership and motivation! Be a squared away Marine and you will get the promotions when they are due.

Normally you can't get Cpl in school since you have to have an MOS to get that rank. Before you graduate your school, you don't rate that MOS yet, so no composite score. You need to have a good enough composite score to make the cutting score of your MOS to make Cpl.

Thanks for all the answers guys, I appreciate it. I'm not going in as PFC.....YET! I'm going to make it happen though, somehow...

I guess right now I should at least try and get my license, then worry about even owning a car huh? lol
