Campaign stars authorized for Iraq, Afghanistan Campaign Medal

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa (June 13, 2008) -- Following the Department of Defense announcement of phases for the Iraq and Afghanistan campaign medals April 21, recently-released Marine Administrative Message 299/08, provides guidance and clarifies the procedures for determining the appropriate number of campaign stars for Marines awarded either medal.
The campaign stars recognize a service member's participation in specific campaign phases and do not represent subsequent awards of the respective campaign medal.
There are three designated campaign phases for the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and four phases for the Iraq Campaign Medal.
Service members are authorized to wear the campaign star for the Afghanistan Campaign Medal if they participated in the Liberation of Afghanistan between Sept. 11, 2001, and Nov. 30, 2003; Consolidation I between Dec. 1, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2006; or Consolidation II between Oct. 1, 2006, and a date to be determined.
Service members who served a tour in Iraq are authorized to wear the campaign star if they participated in Liberation of Iraq between March 19, 2003 and May 1, 2003; Transition of Iraq between May 2, 2003 and June 28, 2004; Iraqi Governance between June 29, 2004 and Dec. 15, 2005; or National Resolution between Dec. 16, 2005 and a date to be determined.
The campaign star is a bronze or silver star, three-sixteenths inch in diameter. Those who qualify for campaign stars may wear a bronze star for each designated campaign in which they participated. In the event that five or more campaign phases are approved for either the ACM or ICM, a silver star will be worn in lieu of five bronze campaign stars. The stars are authorized to wear on the suspension ribbon of the medal and the ribbon bar.
Marines who qualified for the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal for deployments to either the Afghanistan or Iraq area of eligibility prior to May 1, 2005 may still elect to receive either the ACM or ICM in lieu of the GWOTEM, according to the message.
If a Marine elected to retain the GWOTEM for a deployment within either area prior to May 1, 2005, the deployment period will not be used to determine campaign stars for a subsequent ACM or ICM awarded, according to MARADMIN 299/08.
The designation of campaign phases for the ACM or ICM does not modify the current policy that a Marine is not authorized both the GWOTEM and ACM/ICM for the same deployment period.
