Four-star rank is the ultimate achievement for a military officer. Some top generals and admirals who've made unscheduled exits:
• June 5: Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Michael Moseley, ousted after two embarrassing incidents involving the nation's nuclear forces.
• March 11: Navy Adm. William J. Fallon, commander of U.S. Central Command, resigns voluntarily after an article in Esquire magazine portrays him as an opponent of President Bush's Iran policy.
• 2005: Gen. Kevin P. Byrnes, head of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command, is fired following a Defense Department investigation into alleged sexual misconduct.
• 1995: Navy Adm. Richard C. Macke, commander of U.S. Pacific Command, is removed for remarks about the case of U.S. Marines accused of raping a 12-year-old Japanese girl.
• 1990: Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Michael J. Dugan, who held the post for less than three months, is sacked by then-Defense Secretary Richard Cheney for describing to the news media the expected air campaign against Iraq during the first Persian Gulf war.
