SAN DIEGO -- Thousands of well-wishers were on hand Tuesday to welcome home elements of the USS Nimitz and USS Tarawa strike groups following lengthy deployments.

The aircraft carrier Nimitz and two ships in its strike group returned to San Diego Tuesday following a four-month deployment to the Western Pacific. Arriving with the Nimitz returned to its homeport with two ships in its strike group, the guided-missile cruiser Princeton and guided-missile destroyer Higgins.

The Nimitz Carrier Strike Group left San Diego in January to take over in the Pacific for the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk while it underwent maintenance in Yokosuka, Japan. The ship was in the news in February when Russian bombers flew over the carrier, creating a minor international incident.

Also coming home were the Tarawa, an amphibious assault ship; the USS Cleveland, an amphibious transport dock; and the USS Germantown, a dock landing ship.

Family and friends were also on hand to greet the members of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit that were transported aboard the ships.
