Marine Sgt. Jeff Schuller is one of the reasons America is able to ac complish good things in Iraq despite the Pentagon's lack of strategic forethought and exit planning. The Beachwood reservist won a Silver Star, one of the nation's highest awards for valor, for his "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity" three years ago during a deadly ambush in Iraq against the hard-hit 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines.

The Brook Park-based unit has lost 48 Marines over the course of the war.

Yet today, dozens of its Ohio reservists are preparing to return to Iraq. Schuller and 42 other local Marines and sailors flew to California last week to reinforce another Iraq-bound battalion with their field experience.

Schuller went the extra mile, adding to his combat seasoning both Arabic language skills and credits in criminology and Middle Eastern studies from Cleveland State University. It is just such smart and dedicated men and women repeatedly stepping up to safeguard American interests at the peril of their own lives who make our armed forces the best and most adaptable in the world.
