ESCANABA — George Harold Shomin, 84, of Escanaba, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba.

George was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Escanaba, and was the son of George and Anna (Rodman) Shomin. He graduated from Escanaba High School in the class of 1942. During high school, George was an outstanding track and field athlete, holding many track and field records, and he also received the Herman Gessner Trophy. In 1983, George was inducted into the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame.

George served during World War II in the 4th Marine Division in the South Pacific Theatre.

Following the war, George attended Michigan State University where he was a track and field letterman, graduating in 1949. In 1948, George was a decathlon candidate for the U.S. Olympic Team.

George was employed with Major Utilities for 25 years and then he was employed with Mead Paper Co., as a water plant operator until his retirement in 1982.

He married the former Virginia Hoyler on May 23, 1975, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Escanaba.

He was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, the Escanaba Country Club and the Experimental Aircraft Association.

George enjoyed fishing, bike riding and traveling the world.

Family and friends were very important to him and he especially cherished the fun times spent with his grandchildren.

George Harold Shomin is survived by his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Diane (Lyle) Berro of Escanaba, Karen Shomin of Ann Arbor; four step-children, George (Asha) Rusch of Whiddey Island, Wash., Richard (Cheryl) Rusch of Escanaba, Robert (Mindy) Rusch of Jacksonville, N.C., David P. Rusch of Newberry; three grandchildren, Laura Berro, Travis Berro and Karly Hendee; seven step-grandchildren, Kristoffer, Heather, Robert, Jr., William, Bryan, Nathan and Benjamin Rusch; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Shimp and Dorothy Miketinac, and two brothers, Nick and Richard Shomin.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday June 2, 2008, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba.

Funeral services celebrating the life of George Harold Shomin will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, at the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Thomas Lippart officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the St. Stephen’s Church fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery.
