WINDSOR, Colo. — Only four days after a tornado devastated the northern Colorado town of Windsor, residents held a 65th annual Memorial Day service honoring those who have served, as well as a veteran who was the storm’s lone fatal casualty.

Killed by Thursday’s tornado was Oscar Manchester, 52, a former Marine and Vietnam veteran.

A Color Guard organized by the local American Legion participated in the event, firing guns in salute. A Boy Scout played “Taps.” Resident Lori Camerer, whose home was destroyed by the storm, sang the national anthem.

Before the service, Scouts placed an American flag on each of the 253 veterans’ graves at Lakeview Cemetery.

“This is part of our healing process,” said Windsor Mayor John Vazquez. “The disaster obviously was felt heavily in everyone’s hearts, but at the same time, it’s important we honor this day, the soldiers, the men and women of the armed services that are all over the globe.”
