The prospect of widespread City job losses has seen a surge of bankers' trophy wives heading for the divorce courts, say lawyers.

With thousands of job losses announced and more rumoured to be on the way, divorce specialists say that some wives want to secure good divorce deals before their husbands lose their jobs.

Consequently, divorce specialists have seen the number of inquiries treble.
Sandra Davis, of matrimonial law specialists Mishcon de Reya – which initially represented Heather Mills in her divorce battle with Sir Paul McCartney – said: "When money looks like flying out of the window, love walks out of the door.

"Redundancies are still only being whispered about in the big City firms – but already we have never been busier."

Paula Hall, of the relationship counselling service Relate, added: "More financial stress will tend to show the cracks in marriage contracts which were either overtly or covertly financial in the first place.

"When a parent suddenly finds that their lifestyle changes – for example, they can't afford piano lessons for the children – they often consider their options for continuing with the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed."

There has been a 300 per cent rise in the number of inquiries about claiming partners' assets since rumours of redundancies in the City began, research by the law firm Pannone reveals.

But Miles Geffin, from Mishcon de Reya, added that financial motivation for divorce could also come from the working partner.

He said: "Businessmen who lose their job often see it as an opportunity to head straight off to the divorce court before they find a new job – so alimony payments will be based on their unemployed status."

Why not just take out to " to death do us part". Nobody seems capable of a little commitment any more, esspecialy when it gets tough.
Saddly a person will stay loyal to a sports team during a decade long loosing strea, but won't stay loyal to there spouse a few months into hardship.

Let's not pin all the blame on the women. The one thing the man and woman must of had in common was their shallowness. The man for his desire to have a woman purely as a trophey on his arm (hense the term) and the woman for the desire to be well off. Don't tell me some of these old geezers with 28 yr old Penthouse Playmate look alikes really thought she was in love with him.
I love you long time, or until the moneys gone. Then I love you not so long time. :)
