View Full Version : Hey! New poolee here!

Hey everyone! I just joined up here; found this site a while back, but I finally got the urge to sign up. :)
Anyway, just a few things about me: My name is Cory, I'm 19 years old; I go to Easley High School here in Easley, SC. I am a Seventh Day Adventist Christian (meaning I attend church on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath; this sometimes conflicts with the poolee functions, but the Corps, praise the Lord, is very much supportive of my religious beliefs). I joined the Marine Corps this past August after my recruiter, Staff Sergeant Cox, paid a suprise visit to my house (it's a pretty interesting story that I'd love to tell if you guys wanna hear it!). For most of my time in the DEP, the biggest obstacle for me were the pull ups. When I got in back in late August/early September, I could not do any pull ups at all, though I had a 9:25 mile and a half run and could do about 100 crunches in two minutes. Thanks to some help from God, and a lot of encouragement from my recruiter, I worked and worked at it, and now I can do 4-5 pull ups with ease, and my run time has gone down to 8:58! So, now that I can do everything, I am pretty pumped up about going to Parris Island in a little less than two months!
Anyway, it's great to be here. God bless, and Semper Fi (I can use the term as a poolee, right?)!

Semper Fi (I can use the term as a poolee, right?)!
Wrong.

Read the rules polee, specifically rule #6 before the moderators will crucify you.

Learn to use the search function often and race into reading!

Have fun poolee

Given Poolee Haynes's apparent ardent religious beliefs, this may not have been the best choise of wording.

Welcome to the pool Haynes! ;)

@Parks: Well, I was bored and had nothing to do, so I decided to go ahead and post the story. I like telling stories anyways, and I really hope that maybe it can encourage poolees on here (especially the weight loss part; SSgt Cox is constantly telling me how he thinks it's an inspirational story and all that; I don't really see it as such, but IF it is, then that's great). :D

Parks
05-27-08, 10:37 PM
We're all inspirational because we're all Poolees.

Some are just a little more inspirational than others. lol

But seriously, my recruiter is always saying the same thing because he talks to so many rough, tough Okie cowboys who say they can't join because they're too weak and here I am, this 5'1" (on a good day) girl who walked right up and told him I was joining, where do I sign. :D

CJ Haynes
05-27-08, 10:39 PM
@Parks: Lol, he was probably taken by suprise! :D But I bet he shrugged and went, "alrighty, let me get those papers for ya!". :D

Parks
05-27-08, 10:45 PM
He was plenty suprised alright. The poor boy was just in his third month as a recruiter, hadn't recruited a single soul since being dumped in OK, and there I was, a high school senior with a clean record asking how soon he could send me to Boot. lol He was speechless for a good 20 seconds.

CJ Haynes
05-27-08, 10:47 PM
@Parks: And what did he say when after those 20 seconds were past? I bet he was really excited! :D

Parks
05-27-08, 10:59 PM
Well, first he told me I'd have to wait until me Senior year, at which point I glared at him and told him I was a Senior, thank you very much, and then he told me to give him some contact info so we could schedule a meeting. It was pretty funny though because there were a few football players around (there was a table at school set up) and this little red head was glaring a this 6'2" then-Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps. lol Silly Gunny.

CJ Haynes

@Parks: Lol, come on, you REALLY have to post your whole story now! You got me too dang interested! :D

@Brown: God bless you down there! I pray He'll take you through! Believe me, when I go, I'll be relying on God to grant me strength (and I'll work really hard myself).
I got another interesting little story about my MOS: When I first enlisted, I told SSgt Cox (my recruiter) that I wanted to be an MP. He said that would work out since my ASVAB scores were good enough, and I met the other requirements. Well, after I get back from MEPS, I asked him if there was a height requirement for MPs (seeing as how I am only 5'6 tall). He told me he had forgotten to check on that. Well, we went in his office and he checked on it, and sure enough....you have to be at least 5'7 to be an MP. So I missed it by one freakin inch!!
I laugh about it now, but I was pretty disappointed at that time. But still, I am still very grateful to God that I have the opportunity to be a Marine at all, so it's all good....besides, former and current Marines I know always tell me that you wouldn't want to be an MP anyway (saying you may have to get your fellow Marines in trouble if they do something they aren't supposed to do).

Lol thats funny Haynes, MP was what I really wanted to do but my GT score was to low (missed it by 8 points). So I was in comm and then I was thinking about it and decided I wouldn't be happy so I call up Sgt Carillo and say "Hey, Sergeant. I'm about to make a 4 year commitment and I know I'm not going to be happy in comm, so I would like to postpone my shipdate until something opens up in infantry or security forces." well out of nowhere he calls me and says "Hey, theres an opening for Security Forces, BUT you'd have to leave June 23rd." so I think about for all of 2 minutes and agree and now I'm getting ready to shipout lol.

P.S. Thanks for the prayer, I'm not much of a religious man but I have feeling that will change soon enough.

I live right in the heart of Easley, behind the new water tower and the old Buck's restaurant. My sister-in-law goes to Easley high.

Not that any of that matters, but it is nice to see someone on here from my area.

I will be contacting SSgt Cox as soon as I drop some more weight. I still have about 60lbs to go. I dropped 40 in the past 2 months. I have to get down to 227lbs to go to Meps. I want to be a MP.

I run down Pendleton every day, if you see me feel free to join me or yell something motivating to me! Im the fat guy.

Good to go John. Do good on the ASVAB you'll need a GT score of 100 for MP and there are no waivers avaiable for the MOS (some MOS's have a 2-3 pt waiver).

@John: Hey! Nice to meet ya! Have you spoken with SSgt Cox already? I may be thinking of another guy...but anyways, keep it up with the weight! Believe me, you can do it! To loose the weight I lost, I put my faith in God and asked Him to help me out, and I made changes in my diet (cutting out candy, sodas, sweet tea, all that crud), drank only water (and many glasses a day), and I went out every single day to briskly walk or jog. And before long the weight dropped off! So, just stay motivated! I'm here to help if you need me, and if I see you up around Easley maybe we can go running together. May God help you loose the weight!
@Flyboy: Yeah, I'm trying to learn as much as possible. I think it's great that there is a site like this where all us poolees can come to learn more about what to expect from boot camp and how to prepare ourselves. Lol, I just got in from jogging for 30 minutes and doing ab exercises. :D

Yeah, I actually went and talked to him at noon today. He is really good at what he does...boosted my confidence in getting through to boot. I was worried about a few things, but he seems sure that we can get them straightened out. He is a real stand up guy. Of course, he is a Marine.

Sounds good about the running...I told him I was going to try to get to one of the PT days. It is hard for me right now, because I take care of my son at night, so I just push myself in the mornings.

By the way, your post on here about SSgt Cox pushed me over the edge to go ahead and call him. I am very glad I didn't wait until I lost the weight, because he motivates me just talking to him. Plus, as an added bonus, he is married, and he said his wife would gladly talk to mine to let her know how things go as a Marine wife! So, thank you, Poolee Haynes.

You are most welcome, John! I pray for you that you can do what you need to! I know what you mean about SSgt Cox, he is a stand up guy. It's thanks to him that I have been as motivated as I have been. He really gave me encouragement when I was struggling with my pull ups, and when I went through some emotional problems this year, he was always there to listen and give advice. I couldn't ask for a better recruiter. :usmc:
But anywho...did you tell him about me? Lol, if you enlist, maybe I could get the ref. credit (I'm still working toward Pfc!)! I hope to see you around, John!

EDIT: Before I forget, John, we start PT back again next Tuesday. Be at the Easley office by five o clock. We then will be taken to the Anderson office by SSgt Cox so we can PT with those guys (and gals).

Yeah, I did tell him your name, because I don't have any friends joining, and I knew it would help you out a little. I will give him a call and make sure he knows to give you the ref. credit.

I can probably have my mom-in-law watch my son Tuesday, so hopefully I can come along.

Aye aye, Master Sergeant! I was meaning to ask if they took volunteers for lay men. I thought at first that they randomly picked people.
Lol, the funny thing is, other Marines always tell me never to volunteer for anything. :D

I've heard quite the contrary from Master Sergeant above; guides, platoon leaders and scribes tend to get promoted.

I'm just saying that other Marines I have spoken with always seem to say to not volunteer and to basically "lay low" during boot camp (meaning don't try to get the attention of the Drill Instructors).

You will hear never volunteer for anything from many Marines and in most cases that is a very true statement.

In your case, recruits form a circle each evening during BDR for 5 mins. They go to whatever circle they want to and get some words of wisdom from each other. The Lay-reader is responsible for his circle and as time goes on, the recruits that do not want to go to a circle tend to find some sort of motivation when they get their 5 minutes for prayer or whatever religion they prefer. Then those recruits may end up at your circle or gathering. You may just be that one that can help a recruit through by setting the example and being a good team player.

OK when that is done it is lights out and get ready for some slaying when lights come on............

Well, I would like to volunteer for being a lay man when I am at boot camp (like Master Sergeant said). It will give me a chance to be a good witness for God while I'm down there, and I could possibly be able to encourage my fellow recruits in tough times (I'll just have to be sure to always remain motivated myself).

Welcome Aboard. Don't mess with the Marines. They can mess with us all they want. These simple rules have kept me safe while here.

#1-NEVER under any circumstances act like you know everything about the Marines cause you DON'T! (doesn't sound hard but I find alot of poolees who think they do...)

#2-Use Marine language (instead of floor use deck, etc search it)

#3-NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER say Semper FI (please don't rip off my head mods) or Oorah cause you have not earned it

#4- Respect respect respect. Respect everyone espicially the Marines and leave the butt chewings to the Marines cause they are good at it. Plain and Simple.

#5- Always use search first before asking a question cause if you ask a question thats already been answered life is not going to be fun.

#6- Spell correctly and no abreviations.

That's all I can think of right now. Follow these rules and you should leave here with you head on your shoulders. (I'm not kidding)

Well, I have already read through the rules, but thanks for reminding me of them anyway!
I do have a quick question which may sound a bit stupid, but I wanted to ask anyway: Since I am a Protestant, I know I'll be expected to go to Protestant services at boot camp; but if I wanted to go to the Catholic service so I could experience a Catholic Mass, would I be allowed to or not?
