Marines step up patrols at off-limits Camp Lejeune beach

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — The Marine Corps is stepping up enforcement of its no-trespassing rules at Brown's Island, a barrier island on the shoreline of Camp Lejeune popular with fishermen and boaters.

Maj. Nat Fay said Thursday the island is a bombing range that's been off-limits for decades. But that hasn't stopped generations of boaters from making their way to the island for picnics and days at its undeveloped beach.

The Marines began issuing tickets in April 2007. So far, they have caught about 50 trespassers and given out about two dozen tickets.

Fay said the Corps is concerned that boaters filling the Intracoastal Waterway during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend will try and stop at the island. Extra patrols are planned through the summer boating season to keep people off the island.
