I always hear from people "well my dad/mom was in *insert service branch here* so they were supportive, my cousins were too, as was my uncle, etc"
For me it isn't quite like that. The only person in my family to have done any military is my uncle, he did 20+ years in the Coast Guard. No one else has done or probably even thought about military service. I have no family military tradition to uphold no cousins who I've looked up to as a kid as that cool guy in uniform.
It seems every family has at least a number of people who were or are military. There is only one in mine (my uncle) and if he didn't get called up for the draft back in Nam there probably would have been no military in my family.
I suppose it will be my job to start the military tradition if I have a family in the future. Maybe one day my kids or nephews or nieces will look up to me as some kind of superman and want to follow in my footsteps. I don't want to be one of those "son, once you turn 18 you're going in the military!" people though.
I might havegotten a little sidetracked in the last paragraph, but is anyone else in my position with a family with little to no military background to it?

My father was in the Army. I am the very first Marine in the history of my family. The Army for me or any other branch was never an option. My ex-wife's nephew he joined the Marines a few years ago and now calls me his brother. I hope i started a tradition i have no sons but a daughter and if i had sons i would want them to join to carry on that tradition.

My family is all Marine Corps :D
My Grandpa missed WWII because he was in medical school, but went to China after for two years in the Navy Reserves. My uncle was in the Marine Corps during Vietnam. Those two are exceptions in my family, just like I am.
None of my family, with the exception of my uncle has even spoken to me about enlisting. They are all super left-wing and never shut up about President Bush, so I can safely assume what they think of my decision.

My Grandpa was a SGT in the Marine Corps, then he got out and did 24 years in the air force before he passed away. Had two uncle in the Army as well.

My close aged brother joined the Marines, But got kicked in boot 'cause of bad knees. My older brother lost his Army career over broken ankles in a jeep accident. I am the first to complete,,,,, 'Sept for Gen. John Stark,,,,, Commander of Breeds Hill, Boston, Long, Long ago.
I will be the first in my immediate family. The military is completely foreign to my brothers, sister, and parents. Some of their views on it are actually funny to hear. My grandfather served in the Philippines during WWII with the Army as an Engineer. For him it was either that or prison, so that is the only small military tradition that I know of in my family.

My grandfather was a Zero in the AF for four years during Korea stateside. Apart from that, I have an uncle (married in) who was in the Israelli special forces in the late 70s early 80s and lost his eye to grenade shrapnel.
I will be the only Marine I know of in my family, immediate or extended.

My uncle was in the New Zealand Airforce. My dad was a commissioned officer in the Taiwanese Marine Corps, and later on, Navy (military service is required in Taiwan). I'll be the first Marine in the states, aspiring to be an officer just like my father was.
Generally most people who are of Asian descent have parents who have served in their native countries' militaries. The threat of a larger country such as the People's Republic of China and North Korea forces democratic nations to require mandatory service (including college students).
Dad would tell me how familiar American weapons were to him, drilling with M14s and M1 Garands, as well as Type 56s (Taiwanese M-16s)

I have had a distant family member serve in nearly every major conflict since the War of 1812. But as far as close family, my grandpa on my mom's side was an Air Force payroll clerk during Korea. My grandpa on my father's side was a Lieutenant for the Army in the Korean war, never said what he did though. My brother was in the NROTC but dropped out because it didn't match up with his law degree plans. As far as I know I am the first person to ever aspire to be a Leatherneck.

As far as I'm aware, while my dad was in El Salvador, during the Civil War they had in the 1980's he was in their Military for about 18 months, but I'm the first to hopefully acheive my dream of becoming a Marine and definately going to start a tradition.

My dad and brother were Marines. Dad was Motor T. And my brother was Diesel Mechanic. My grandpa, on my moms side was in the Air Force, but i'm not sure what he did. I'm not positive if either of my grandpas on my dads side were in the Military. I will hopefully be a 3rd generation Marine if I can make it through Boot Camp.

I'm the first Marine in my family. My mom is pretty much a hippie and I knew she wouldnt be too excited about me joining the finest fighting force on the planet. My dad was a coastie and wanted me to follow his footsteps. I wanted to be the best so I enlisted THEN I talked to them about it. lol that was a fun night.

Grandpa 1: Army, Grandpa 2: Airforce Uncle 1: Airforce, Uncle 2: Airforce, Uncle 3: Army. I will be the first Marine in my family and proud of it. I was always the "art kid" growing up so none of family ever though I would join the military better yet the Core, but now that they know all of the stories keep coming. I didn't know how many of my relatives served until after they heard about me joining up.

Well i'm not the first in the military but the first in the Marine Corps and the first female to even think about joining the military.
hmm.... My Grandfather did 10 years in the Corps, My Uncle Did 4 Years In the Army, My Other Uncle did 12 Years in the Army (still Active duty), My aunt did 3 Years in the Air Force, My Brother is in the army (been active for 2 years), me? I'm going to the Marine Corps for 15 - 30 years
Well, my family and I came from the asia continent, so nobody before me or anyone related has ever been in the military. I'm the very first, hopefully won't be the last one.

My mom, dad, and step dad were all airforce (security forces and mechanics) big shock when I told them I wouldn't be following the air force way, but support none the less. my wife is ex/ navy first in her fam to make it in the military so I am very lucky to have someone backing my decision. I can't wait!:bunny:

First one in my blood line. When i asked my Grandfather, on my fathers side, if anyone even served in the Military period, he said "we always were to poor to worry about it, we had family to feed" i said what about way back, like during the civil war and he said "north, south, east, west, you come on our property/ farm, you got shot" Now my Granfather on my step mom's side served as a Marine during WWII. I will hopefully be the first Marine in my family for as long as I can trace it back. Actually, my dad, a few of my uncles, both my grandfathers etc. were either Army or Navy.
This is a bit off topic, but my uncle actually got drafted and desperately didnt want to go to Vietnam but did. My dad signed up with the army willingly would have went to Vietnam but got sent to Germany.

My grandpa was in the Navy, dad in the Navy, and great grandpa in the Navy. Other grandpa in the Army, Step dad was in the Army, brother in Army boot camp right now, other brother awaiting to go to Army boot camp. Guess I am just the only one that decided to join the real Military. Just joking, ALL military is respectful and I respect all of what They have done and going to do. Oh and my Dad is now in blackwater over in Iraq. So a very supportive family.

Just me too man. I will be the first, if I make it.
I'll be the first, as far as I know. My paternal grandfather was in the Navy in WW2 in the Pacific. Maternal grandpa was also in the Pacific, but Air Force. A relative of my dad's was an Army journalist who landed on Omaha Beach with a typewriter strapped to his back, but no Marines that I know of in my family.
Still got some stuff (getting a hold of medical records) that needs to be sorted out before I can go to boot, but if I'm meant to be a Marine, I'll get there.

Two of my uncles were in the Army (my uncle Chris was a Ranger; really funny story of how he got into that, if you guys wanna hear it!). My grandfather, while not in any official branch, was a Merchant Marine during World War 2. As far as the Marine Corps goes, though, I'll be the very first one. My older brother, Troy, joined the Navy back in December (and yes, I tried to get him to enlist in the Marines, and he seriously considered it, but he decided the Navy was the best for him).
I'll be proud, by God's grace, to be the first United States Marine in this family. :flag:

My father is a former marine. He's extremely harsh though. I think it's just because he knows how it is in recruit training. I appreciate it.
The rest of my family is supportive-ish..I keep getting the "Why did you join?" question with all the other stupid why questions. Especially "Why...how could you do this to your family, Heather!? WHHYYYY?!?!?!" followed with crying.
Anyway. I'm basically my own support system. Go me! =]

Grandfather was a Marine who served at Guadacanal, otherwise none at all. I have two very anti-war liberal parents so the situation at home is just lovely when we talk about my enlistment.
Ive had lots of relatives who served in the military, only my dad served in the Corps. He was an 0351 and im going in as an 18xx.

I recently learned that my great grandfather was in the United States Army. He's originally from England, and his two other brothers served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy, respectively. They both died in battle in what I would assume were for colonial skirmishes.
My great grandfather wanted to join the British armed services as well, but his father forbid him to do so because of how his brothers died. So he ran away from England and went to New York City and enlisted into the United States Army.
This was during the time of the Spanish-American War and Spain had just lost, and in the Treaty of Paris, Spain relinquished the Philippines to the Americans in order to pay for the war. My great grandfather was sent to the Philippines to help claim it, and that is how he met my great grandmother.
The rest was history! This gives me a lot of serious moto. I thought I was the first in my family history to enlist into the military, but now that I know that I'm carrying on a family tradition, it makes me want to work harder.
Also, my maternal grandfather was a civilian doctor at Clark Air Base in the Philippines during the Vietnam War. He was head of the communicable diseases department, and treated G.I.s with V.D. before they can return to America. If any Vietnam era Marines had to go through this, you can thank my grandfather!

My Cousin and I went to Boot Camp together and were the first and still the only Marines in a family full of veterans. My Father, Uncle and Grandfathers were all in the Army, my younger cousins joined the Navy (against much protest from myself) one is a Senior Chief and the youngest just completed MOS School and is stationed in Japan.
I will be the first Marine in my family history.

I'll be the first Marine in my family. Both of my grandfathers were in the Air Force (Not sure when my maternal grandfather served, but my paternal grandfather was in WWII back when it was actually part of the Army), and my uncle worked with the Army up at the Yakima firing range, but yeah, no Marines. Yet.
I'll be the first Marine. My grandfather was the first to go Air Force, everyone else was Army since the Revolutionary War. He caught flack for choosing the Air Force, so I guess I'm lucky no one is around to harass me for going against the family again. :)
