National Museum of the Marine Corps Celebrates Memorial Day with Family Activities
Global War on Terrorism Artifacts, Art Exhibit, Custom Bikes, and Children’s Activities Help Commemorate This Memorial Day
TRIANGLE, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The National Museum of the Marine Corps will host a series of activities for the entire family to commemorate this Memorial Day. An art exhibition, custom-designed Marine Corps motorcycles, children’s workshops and newly installed artifacts from Iraq and Afghanistan will be on display at the state-of-the-art Museum near Quantico, Virginia.
Memorial Day weekend marks the opening of artist Tom Hubbard’s traveling exhibit “SEMPER FIDELIS: How I Met My Father” at the NMMC. Located on the second deck of the Museum, the multi-media show features 20 works of original art, inspired by the artist’s personal journey to learn about his father, a U.S. Marine killed in Vietnam. In 2000, Hubbard traveled to Vietnam to trace his father’s steps, documenting the journey along the way. His show combines photography, ceramics and graphic design and will be on display at the Museum through July 7.
Outdoors at the Museum’s entrance, visitors will be greeted by a display of custom-designed Marine Corps motorcycles. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the men who built the bikes honoring Marines in service and learn their stories. The bikes will be on display Saturday May 24 and Sunday May 25.
Activities at the Museum have also been designed to give children ways to commemorate Memorial Day. On Saturday May 24 and Sunday May 25 children, along with their parents and grandparents, will have the opportunity to illustrate and write postcards to deployed Marines. With instructors, children will create their own artwork featuring the Marine Corps’ bulldog mascot Chesty. On Saturday May 24 only, students will also have the opportunity to create a formal Marine Corps hat, or “cover,” and listen to stories about the importance and meaning of Memorial Day in the Museum’s Children’s Corner.
Newly installed cases in the Museum’s Global War on Terrorism gallery will display over 100 objects from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Artifacts include Marine Corps uniforms, flight suits and protective gear, unmanned aerial vehicles, captured improvised explosive device (IED) components and an Iraqi voting kit.
With hundreds of artifacts and immersive and interactive exhibits, the National Museum of the Marine Corps appeals to the entire family. Receiving over 800,000 visitors in less than two years, the Museum has established itself as a major Virginia destination for families across the region. Rotating galleries and activities, along with the future expansion and addition of several era galleries, there is always something exciting and new to see at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
