DURANT (AP) -- An Iowa Marine is recovering after being shot in the head when his unit came under fire in Afghanistan, his parents said.

Marine Lance Cpl. Sam Hansen, a member of the 1st Marines, 6th Battalion, was on patrol last weekend when he was shot, said his father, Ron Hansen, of Durant.

Hansen and his wife, Kristy, received a call from their 21-year-old son on Mother's Day, telling them he had been shot.

"He didn't sound very good," Kristy Hansen said.

They later received the official call from the Marines, telling them their son was in serious but stable condition.

The bullet penetrated his helmet, which slowed and redirected it, causing a fragment to enter the soft tissue on the right side of his head, bruising of the brain and some swelling.

The Hansens said their son had called the day before to wish his mom a happy Mother's Day. They also saw him on television on May 1 during a news program on the Marines' participation in a NATO surge against the Taliban.

Ron Hansen said they were able to catch a glimpse of their son walking through a mud hut.

"It was just amazing to see him. He looked great," Kristy Hansen said.
