HONOLULU — While much attention is focusing on natural disasters in China and Myanmar, the U.S. military is preparing for any possible hurricane that may hit Hawaii.

The U.S. Pacific Command this week is conducting its annual Makani Pahili, or “strong wind,” exercise aimed at preparing for recovery from an island hurricane.

The hurricane season in the Central Pacific runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.

The exercises assume a Category 4 hurricane with 155 mph winds has hit the center of Oahu. Under the scenario, the military is helping the island recover from $2.6 billion in damage, including the loss of 6,000 homes.

The Army has set up tents on Ford Island to serve as command post for the exercises, which include about 300 Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine personnel across Oahu.
