The U.S. military command in Iraq is warning military, civilian and contract workers about giving their government identification cards to hotel employees while traveling and working in the region.

According to a Operations Security Warning issued by Multi-National Force—Iraq, several incidents were reported recently in which hotel employees asked for Common Access Cards from travelers trying to check into their rooms.

The security document warns people not to give their cards, even for photocopying. “Be suspicious if the hotel is asking for more information that the country’s customs and immigration offices normally require,” it reads.

The warning recommends providing only tourist passports or a driver’s license, and recommends avoiding giving any information that identifies the traveler as a U.S. government or Defense Department employee.
