USS Green Bay nears completion

Sea trials moved back until June; Aug. delivery set

The USS Green Bay, the second ship to have Green Bay as its namesake, is reaching the final stages of construction and is set for an Aug. 29 delivery date.

"The ship itself is about 95 percent complete," said Cmdr. Joe Olson. "The different rooms in the ship are being painted, permanent lighting installed and there's a lot of systems testing being done."

Although the ship was originally scheduled for sea trials toward the end of May, the trials have been pushed back until sometime in June.

"That was done to give the contractor more time to do the systems testing prior to putting it out to sea," Olson said. "The contractor will be putting it through some pretty rigorous testing."

Designated LPD-20 (Landing Platform Dock), the USS Green Bay is designed to move and deploy ground troops via sea, Olson said.

The ship can also perform humanitarian missions. This includes extracting Americans from hostile areas or providing food, water, and shelter during emergencies.

"The city is well known for its commitment to team efforts," Olson said. "It's a pretty special city, and I think that's why the secretary chose that."

During its construction in Avondale, La., the ship is running with a smaller crew of 42. Many of the sailors who will eventually call the ship home are completing training in San Diego.

"When the ship's fully manned we have a crew of 363, and that's 360 Navy, and three permanently assigned Marines," Olson said. "Our ability is to carry up to 699 Marines when we embark."

As of right now things are on schedule again and Olson said that the crew is excited to perform on a ship named after Green Bay.

"Not just for the city, but for us serving on it, it's a huge honor," Olson said.
