One of my classmates, a fellow poolee, signed up for personnel clerk as a reservist with an ASVAB of fifty-something. He claims he is getting a $10,000 bonus. I signed up for active duty under aircraft maintenance with an ASVAB of 88 without a 'bonus'.

I thought the Marine Corps' incentive was the title of US Marine. Is this guy really getting a bonus? Why would he be getting a bonus and not me? Any of you guys get a bonus?

Personally, I think this guy is full of it.

It's in the contract. My contract has me in SigInt with a signing bonus of $15,000. ASVAB was a 96, but I'm not sure that's relevant; you just mentioned your friend's score.

I know a few fellow poolees that will get bonuses. I didnt qualify for one i guess. But hell, i didnt join the Marine Corps for money, i joined to earn the privilege to be called a United States Marine. Thats all that matters to me.

I've heard of reservists getting large bonuses.

The way my recruiter explained it. There are certain bonuses for certain jobs or contracts or other requirements. But they run out after some time either because of limited numbers of a cutoff time. It could be available today and tomorrow it isn't.

Bonuses are for hard to fill MOS's they only pay if you satisfie the requirements. Combat Arms MOS's have a habit of having those bonuses

Well put, I wasn't bought into enlisting, I enlisted because I wanted to earn the title of United States Marine. If money is what you want then join the army, but as for me I want to be a Marine. Your heart needs to be in this 110%.

I got a bonus when I signed up, it was only like $3,000 though. It was the recruiter's way of hooking me up I suppose. Lord knows he didn't need to give me a bonus. He was shocked when I walked in and said I wanted to join, even without him ever having tried to recruit me.

I was offered a $10,000 bonus for my 0600 MOS but I would have to leave in June, right after I graduate so I turned it down. The title of Marine is a hundred times more important to me then 10 grand in my pocket. Like I told my recruiter if I was in for the money I'd have gone to the Army :P

I got a bonus but I wasnt told about until 8 months after I enlisted and I took one of the 6 year Infantry contracts, most poolees walk in to the bonuses after all they are called bonuses for a reason they shouldnt be the reason one should join in my opinion.

On Topic: My only bonus was the fact that I got unexpectedly bumped up to E-2 while at MEPs. I think it was because I had college credit, even though I had a GED. Now I just need to recruit a few people and I could possibly come out of boot as a LCPL!

I had that as an option when my recruiter sat down with me after MEPS. I couldn't decide between 0300 or 2600. I ended up going with cryptologist because if I end up learning Arabic, that's something I could use if I decided to make the switch to infantry. Vice versa doesn't work as well.

I didn't find out that I was getting a bonus until after I signed the dotted line. I then found out it was going to be around 10k but they were still negotiating the bonuses for the year. Then I found out the bonus I secured for Crypto Linguist is 25k. That was a big surprise.

My recruiter told me yesterday that there is something like a $7500 bonus if you take a 5 year infantry contract and a $15000 bonus if you take a 6 year infantry contract. I stayed with 4 years for right now because it's not about the money anyways. It's about becoming the best of the best and being able to call yourself a United States Marine!

Agreed, why the fuc$ would you join the Corps for a bonus. I remember when I went to the Marine Recruiters office told him I wanted to join, and I didn't care about a bonus or anything like that. He said here is the paperwork. Btw besides I couldn't complain I got a free plane ticket to San Diego to go run around and get yelled at. What more could a 18 year old have asked for.:D

We had a Sgt from our shop leave not too long ago and go to recruiter school. He just graduated on Thursday and our whole shop went down to the ceremony. Afterward he was telling us there was so much that recruiters can give out that most will not. For example the Marine Corps college fund which was an extra 17 grand added on to your GI bill and also a $4000 bonus for leaving in the winter months. Personally I didn't get any bonus of any kind. I was so eager to join I didn't really look into it. But considering the commitment you are making, what is really wrong with getting a bonus? It is not like the Marine Corps is going to be paying a ridiculously high salary.

you are all complaining about getting money for something you were going to do anyway? what are you, retarded? Shut-up and take the money when you can because I know some Staff NCO's who never get a bonus but their fellow MOS SNCOs get them almost every re-enlistment.

it's a timing thing I suppose, but don't complain if they are willing to pay you a little something for joining.

besides this has been talked about, so next time do a search about bonuses.

I don't see anything wrong with getting one if your entitled to it. I didn't sign up for a bonus, but when I was looking up info pertaining to motor t. I came across a maradmin that mentioned I was entitiled up to $20k for signing up. When I took it to my recruiter he look amazed that i found it. Unfortunetly he knew I still just wanted to ship, and kept putting off the paper work.

Now looking back. I would of definetly told him I wasn't shipping until it gotten taken care of. Like I said I didn't join for the money, but ****. Money definetly helps. I still have bills piled up from while I was training. Alot of **** I could of taken care of.

I got the ASVAB bonus 10k or 15k whatever...too bad it doesn't go with the 2009 GI bill...lol. You shouldn't have to take a bonus to serve your country, it is sad that it has gotten like this. We should be spending that money on better equipment rather than spending it on people that will only sign up if they get the bonus.

The job field i'm looking into (Electronics Maintenance) is offering a bonus. I did not ask for any sort of bonus, but the recruiter told me about it having a bonus included with it. If they're offering it, why refuse it? Now, if you're one of those people that only join the service with the intentions of a bonus, that's different in my opinion.

Best of luck to you all!

kid, ELMACO is going to be your new home.... hope you're not a crypto tech... you get locked in a vault all day.

all electronics are sent to ELMACO, there is no 2nd ech attached to units, you'll be in a Maint battalion. Buy a laptop for deployments 'cause you'll have a nice clean-room environment that you'll be able to play games in... and it's going to be temperature controled... and if your A/C breaks and the only other one is going to the CO's office... per the CMC you get your CO's A/C unit.

enjoy that plush spot...

While I was at MEPS I roomed with a guy going into the Army Reserve, and one of the first questions he asked me was "So what kind of incentives are you getting for going into the Marines"? I looked at him puzzled and said incentives? The only incentive I need is earning the right to call myself a United States Marine after recruit training. That alone surpasses any validation money could offer.

RottnDobe
12-25-08, 08:38 PM
Yeah when I was at MEPS I talked to an Army recruiter who asked me what bonus I was getting. After I told him I wasn't getting one, he told me how much the Army would offer me (20K in case you're curious). I was afraid he was going to try to recruit me, but luckily he could tell I wasn't interested and began talking about something else. He turned out to be a pretty cool guy.

Merry Christmas everyone.

I want to be a Marine really bad. But I wouldn't mind a bonus Lol. Lord knows I could use that money. I get sooo much s**t from my friends and family when i tell them that I'm not getting a bonus or a cool National Guard backpack for singning up is not even funny. Lol. But I guess I'm at a point where I realize that if you sign up with the Marines it's because you want to be a Marine. If you don't want to be one, there is no bonus or incentive that will make you want to be one.
