Emotional family members cheered the arrival in Houston early today of 144 Marines after a seven-month deployment in Iraq.

Three charter buses, escorted by Houston police cruisers, delivered the Marines from Hobby Airport to the Reserve Center on Old Spanish Trail, near the Texas Medical Center, at about 2 a.m. today. The Marines, with the Houston-based 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, had traveled from North Carolina’s Camp Lejeune, where they have been since their return from Al Anbar province last week.

It was a long, anxious seven months for many of the families.

Sally Maddocks said she did her best to avoid news reports about the war while her son Matthew was away.

“You knew there was always that inevitably there could be that knock on the door,” she said.
