Stars for campaign medals authorized

WASHINGTON — Servicemembers can now wear campaign stars on their Iraq or Afghanistan campaign medals to designate the phases of conflict in which they served, the Pentagon announced this week.
Each star will represent a campaign phase rather than the number of tours a servicemember has served, according to Pentagon spokesman Army Lt. Col. Jonathan Withington.
That policy holds with military tradition, according to Withington. Traditionally, the stars note service in designated portions of a conflict or war rather than an servicemember’s number of tours.
Servicemembers who already have qualified for an Iraq or Afghanistan campaign medal may wear the stars on the suspension and campaign ribbon of the medal. Bronze-colored stars represent one phase; silver-colored stars represent five bronze campaign stars.
The three campaign phases and associated dates for Afghanistan are:
Liberation of Afghanistan, Sept. 11, 2001, to Nov. 30, 2001;
Consolidation I, Dec. 1, 2001, to Sept. 30, 2006; and
Consolidation II, Oct. 1, 2006, to a date to be determined.
The four campaign phases and associated dates established for Iraq are:
Liberation of Iraq, March 19, 2003, to May 1, 2003;
Transition of Iraq, May 2, 2003, to June 28, 2004;
Iraqi Governance, June 29, 2004, to Dec. 15, 2005; and
National Resolution, Dec. 16, 2005, to a date to be determined.
The phases were created on Feb. 19 based on recommendations from Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, the U.S. Central Command, branch departments, Multi-National Forces–Iraq and the Army’s Center for Military History, according to Withington.
