245, 100 situps, 15 pullups, and being conservative on my run time putting it at 23.

Running will be the biggest challenge for me if I ever want to get to 300.

Yea, I know what you mean. I'm flat footed too, and that **** killed me in boot camp. But I recently did some research on proper shoe types I should be wearing for my feet and I found some shoes that help a great bit. You should look into that.

Sure, try searching these topics:

Pronation
Over pronation
Under pronation

I over pronate, so I found some running shoes made by Nike specifically to correct over pronation.

There's a site I found that actually explains what each one means and how to determine which one you are. I believe over and under pronation are flat foot problems, while pronate is just normal.

I may be mistaken but in the fleet if a young Marine is running PFT somewhere around 25 minutes or beyond, your in a dead heat with the SNCO's or they're hot on your heels. That's not a desirable positionhttp://www.leatherneck.com/forums/images/icons/icon13.gif

And thank you Marines for your help in getting my PFT up. One question though: is there any techniques any Marines or other poolees know in getting up my abdominal endurance faster than just pounding out crunches? Because if doing crunches is the fastest way, then fine, I'm just kind of on a track to get the PFT up as quickly as possible because I've got an interview with my OSO coming up faster than I can get it really competive, so I'm trying to at least show him that I'm dedicated to getting into the NROTC.

So anyway, any tips on increasing any part of the PFT any faster would be great.

07-20-08, 12:45 AM
Hey, this is related to the PFT crap that y'all are posting 100% but not in the way you're looking for.

I don't know about your sections/platoons/units/etc, but in my platoon, you WILL be non-rec'ed for promotion to Cpl if your PFT score is less than 270. At the level of Sgt, on a FITREP (fitness report) a First Class PFT is the top of the top, regardless of score [as I'm told] is as good as it gets.

Look, poolees, Marines: a first class is good and all, but if you're not getting at least a 285, you're f***in yourself. That's the minimal amount of PFT points for the max amount of PFT points towards cutting score. I don't think a Cpl should EVER have less than that. Yes, I 100% know PT is NOT all the Corps is about, but, I'll tell ya what, due to my standards, in 3rd AABn, H&S Co, S-6 ISC (which means 3rd Amphibious Assault Vehicle Battalion [1MARDIV's Bastard Child (def. not POGS)] Headquarters and Service Company - Communications Platoon - Data :::::: we have the best PFT's on average. Yes, believe it or not, best on average. That can be proven through official data. The one Marine (****bag) that gets a 163 drops the avg [we have only 4 in our Bn] to 269 (gross)!

ZSKI
07-20-08, 11:19 AM
No offense CPL yes i believe every Marine should run a first class but the importance the Marine Corps puts on it ****es me of because thats how retards become cpl's and sgt's. Yes i believe its important but my list would go 1.) Quality of the marine (His pro/cons knowledge in his mos, and leadership) 2.) Shooting (Im sorry if your only a marksmen you should be non rec a KD course is not hard) 3.) Then PFT( if your not first class your non rec its not hard to get a 230)

Now to answer your question. Well your abs are used for everything even in pushups they are bieng used if done properly. To work your abs do other things besides crunches such as steam engines , hello dollys, leg lifts etc etc.

It'll help a lot dropping weight while I'm at boot, as I'll be on fat trays. I'm 68.5 inches and weigh 200-205. I can do 12 pull-ups and about 75 crunches, but I'm only running 12:45 in the 1.5 mi and can't run a full 3 mi. without going to a walk.

Poolee Blackshirts... if you can't run 3 miles without walking you need to slow the pace down. So much of distance running is mental, if you are telling yourself before you step off for your run that you are going to start walking at a landmark you'll quit running and walk everytime. Slow your initial pace and breath... in through your nose and out your mouth... rythmic breathing get a good cadence in your head and you can run for ever... Practice makes perfect... how many times are you running per week?

I was running everyday, then I learned you should probably take a day in between before running again so I just do pushups, situps, and pull-ups on the days in between.

The biggest problem for me was lower back pain when running, but it's finally starting to go away. I was working with physical therapists to strengthen the muscles in my back to fix this problem. It's better, but nowhere near perfect.

Do superman's. Lay on your stomach and lift your legs and chest off the ground, arms straight out. Hold for as long as you can and repeat a couple of times.

As for running, if you can't run 3 miles without walking, then you need to push yourself to run even if your trotting along during the tired point at .05 miles per hour, keep your legs moving in a running fashion. Only way to be able to run 3 miles is to force yourself to.

Just got back from the Y and just ran 3 miles with ease. I just needed a little common sense given to me to slow down. Now I just have to find a better pace to where I can finish, but also push as hard as I can to get my time down.

yes, this is the main reason for all failed running attempts... you will be yelling cadence of left right left while running in formation on the island so that you learn to breath.

you are hyper-ventilating just like every other non-running fatty mc-fatfat who grew up on mcdonalds and video games. just run breathing in every other left foot and exhale every other right foot... you'll do fine so long as you do that.

who are you? you make no sense... motivation doesn't mean pushing someone over their personal edge... if you aren't this kid or his personal trainer then don't tell him to push it, 'cause you obviously missed the fact that he's got lower back pain... which 'superman's won't do anything except aggravate that.

He said that his doctors told him he was getting lower back pain because his lower back muscles need to be strengthened. I mentioned it as a way to help strengthen his lower back muscles so that pain will not develop while he is running, not to trying and hurt the guy.

Also Blackshirts... what are you wearing on your feet during your running? Your lower back can be injured even with serious running history if your footwear is not up to the task. Running shoes need to be retired after 400-500 miles of use, even if they look great. The cushion soles gets pounded after a while and won't give you the "give" you need. Also try running on the soft shoulder of the road when you can. Running on the beach is best, dirt is next, pavement, then cement. Cement has zero give and is BAD for you... Get some new running shoes... and take it easy during those training runs... You'll get there.

Ha, I didn't grow up fat SSgt. College did that to me :p. I played SS in baseball and LB in football. I was never really introduced to long distance until now though.

Thanks for all the advice though. It was really helpful.

I know people will "judge" my posts, but I have been running for decades... I have run the Marine Corps Marathon, Honolulu Marathon, the Oahu Perimeter Relay (134 miles) and countless PFT's :)

One thing you need to be comfortable with in the Corps is running... you'll do a lot of it.

19 Pullups
100 crunches

ok, just kidding, you smoked my best PFT I've ever ran... the pull-ups gets me everytime.

I ran an 18 min and did the 100 crunches (see I do have friends!!) but I did only 14 pull-ups.

good luck on that extra hustle on the run!! if only you sprinted a little harder you'd have a 72!!

I bet you weren't even puking!

ok, I'm done with that type of motivation... good job on the PFT Cwalling!!!!

I just went through MEPS as an officer candidate and did my initial Physical Fitness Test. I've been training for about 7-8 weeks after contacting the local selection office. My scores:

Pullups: 13 (65pts)
Crunches: 89 (89pts) - yikes, something went wrong there today!
3mile: 18:54: (94pts)

248/300

I'm looking to increase my pull-ups by 2 and crunches to 100 (which I normally get) in a few weeks to get my score up to the 270 range for my application to go to the board on May 1st!

your sit-ups might be a lack of friends......

a Marine without 100 crunches is a Marine without friends.

decent run-time... that'd improve at OCS.

the pull-ups is your money maker, hit that area hard.

Thanks SSGT - I'm currently a teacher and am applying for the Oct '09 start date so I have all summer to get to 300 before I head out.

I'm not sure what the deal was on the sit-ups. I'm usually over 100 by about 5 or 6, I just had a bad day there I guess! I know I need to improve my upper-body strength, I'm a naturally slim guy and have been working hard on that. I've seem to hit a wall (which I understand is natural). I can't get that darn #14 but have been improving the number of reps on later sets.

The Captain at the OSO is trying to talk me into going air. Before his current assignment he was a helo pilot. I'm still debating between ground and air...

the question is wheter or not you want to lead Marines or fly them places.

as for the pull-ups, just do your max set 5 -10 times a day and you can probably break through your plateau.

possibly using a weight belt or something to help build some more muscle while doing pull-ups.

well, first I'd suggest you use Rank when addressing someone who happens to be a Marine.

secondly as I said, it's not something you need to worry about, your drill instructors will not allow you to get a second class PFT if you aren't fat to begin with.

what are your current PFT numbers? have you even thought to keep count? I'll let you know if you've nothing to worry about.

and if I wasn't such a nice guy I'd give you the title of nasty turd... why is it Poolees go around as if they run this place?! any Marines have an answer to this?!

One question for the Marines, as it seems to fit the overall topic...
My IST score is on my signature, and I run a three-mile in about 19:30-20:05.
My only issue is running. My question is, if I were to ship out tomorrow, (just hypothetically) is it conceivable for my run-time to drop in boot camp and for me to get a 300, assuming that I work my hardest and put out in boot?

@ JSam... yes, just remember when your DIs ask who the rabbits are you raise you grubby paw in the air... you'll speed up for sure. might even get into the 17:00 range if you push yourself till you puke.

@MrSnips... I don't like smart asses... your response and you deliberate spelling out of my rank implies that you have issues with authority... maybe if you realized that respect for higher ranking Marines than your punk ass will ever achieve is part of what you need to do to be a Marine... so lets see you start doing it without question.... still waiting.

There are only two acceptable responses to the SSgt at this point... and they would be:

1) Aye, SSgt.

2) Aye, SSgt!

No explanations, no back-tracking, no off-hand comments about how much you learned. Keep it shut, learn a lesson, swallow your pride and understand that you've disrespected a Marine SNCO and were you a Marine already, you'd pay for it dearly (an NCO, SNCO or Commissioned officer doesn't have to touch you or even yell at you to make you feel like absolute utter dog crap).

I'm telling you right now.. if you puke while running a mock PFT or even a 3 mile test run that your DIs are keeping track of and you puke while running without skipping a beat they will make you a squad leader if they haven't already... they might even invite you in the duty hut for a beer at some point....

and if you're confused on how to write my first name just look to the left of my post and see how it's written... it's the one just before my last name.

Getting back into the topic here. For those interested; if you work at it, you will improve greatly during boot. I went in with a lower score.

22:30 3mi run
8 Pull-ups
70 or so Crunches

When I graduated boot I was scoring a 289 out of 300 with:
19:45 3mi run
21 Pull-ups
142 Crunches

Not real impressive but a big improvement. If you work at it you will make the grade
