Museum organizers hope to raise an additional $22 million dollars to help tell the stories of local Marines.

The Museum of the Marine got $30,000 closer this week.

Museum officials received their second major corporate donation Monday when the first $30,000 installment was presented by Wachovia Foundation, which has pledged $100,000 to the organization for its planned 40,000-square-foot facility on a six-acre tract at Lejeune Memorial Gardens.

The museum received a $100,000 pledge and an installment of $20,000 from First Citizens Bank in January.

To date, over $6 million has been raised, Ayers said.

Board Chairman Bill Ayers said the museum expects 110,000 visitors a year generating $11 million annually to the local economy.

Ayers said the design of the building has been completed and the next step is the engineering documents.

Winston-Salem-based architectural firm Callow, Johnson, Moore & West received an Honor Award last year from the Piedmont North Carolina section of the American Institute of Architects for its proposed design for the museum.

Hilferty Museum Planning and Exhibit Design, out of Athens, Ohio, is planning the interior design. Other clients of Hilferty include Carnegie Museum of National History in Pittsburgh, Pa. and The National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C.

Mike Zalenski, a volunteer who Ayers called its "collections guy," has been working on inventorying all the material for the museum.

"We've had a huge amount of material donations from families and estates ...," Zalenski said. "And I've got it almost completely inventoried, but we keep getting more ... I just hope that people will really start to step up and donate money, so we can get this thing going."

Ayers said soliciting donations for the project has been ongoing.

"We're pleased with the support we've gotten, but we need more," Ayers said.

A public dedication of the site is planned for 11 a.m. May 1. Groundbreaking for the museum is anticipated in 2009.
