COLUMBUS COUNTY -- Some Marines made a pit stop in a small Columbus County town after two vehicles in their military convoy flipped.

The accident happened on Highway 74/76 in Bolton around 10 Wednesday morning.

Three Marines were injured, but have been released from the hospital.

The convoy was traveling from Camp Lejeune to Columbia when two vehicles flipped into a ditch.

140 Marines were stranded, but the town's emergency response team allowed them to use the Fire Department as a resting place. They even prepared a home-cooked meal for the Marines.

"These guys are going fighting for our freedom, it was a drop in the bucket. We didn't mind doing it at all," said Jackie Hampton from the emergency response team.

"We really had no idea that Bolton would open its arms as it did so were very thankful," said Major Rob Helper of the 4th Marine Division.

The convoy is back on the road, heading to Columbia.
