Eastover Marines to deploy to Horn of Africa
Wednesday, April 16, 2008

EASTOVER – Fox Company, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, located aboard Fort Jackson at the McCrady National Guard Training Center, has been mobilized and placed on active duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Approximately 140 Marines from Fox Company reported to Marine Corps Reserve Center Eastover April 21 for mobilization, processing, and training prior to the unit moving to Camp Pendleton, Calif., in early May for additional training before the unit deploys to the Al Anbar Province region of Iraq.

The company will join other units from 1st LAR that are being activated to conduct counter insurgency operations, route security, and mounted and dismounted patrolling for seven months before the Marines return home. The company will deploy with their light armored vehicles, which provide highly mobile, protected anti-armor fire support to light infantry and reconnaissance forces, and provide the capability to defeat heavy, armored targets at long ranges.

The company was last activated for Djibouti in June 2004 through June 2005 and other Marines have served individually in Iraq and Afghanistan. The lesser known mission for the War on Terror lies in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa where Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa’s mission is to detect, deter and defeat transnational terrorism in the Horn of Africa.

For news organizations the unit point of contact is First Sgt. Anthony N. Page who can be reached by e-mail at anthony.n.page@usmc.mil or by phone at 803-783-0759.
