Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center aids Marine after bad accident while home

JOLIET- Justin Albright, a 19-year-old recent military boot camp graduate from Wilmington, will be returning to the Marines thanks to neurosurgery performed by Dr. Tamir Hersonskey at Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center.

After suffering a terrible trauma, Justin recently underwent brain surgery that saved his life.

In the middle of January, Albright's car struck a tree on the front passenger side. The front right tire turned completely sideways, causing his car to veer off the road.

After the crash, Albright was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center for brain surgery performed by neurosurgeon Dr. Tamir Hersonskey.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Albright was unconscious. He had severe brain damage and was comatose with weakness of the left and right sides of his body. Because of the extent of damage, it was very possible that he would not survive the trauma.

Dr. Hersonskey performed a decompressive craniectomy and a placement of a catheter for monitoring.

No complications occurred during the surgery, but Justin's brain was still very swollen. A piece of his skull was removed to make room for the swelling and allow the brain to recover.

“We see a lot of injuries like this,” says Dr. Hersonskey. “His injuries were substantial. His outcome is very good, and I expect that he will be able to return to the Marines. He is a strong man; after such a serious injury, he pulled through, which is a great triumph.”

Despite initial uncertainty, Albright awoke with minimal damage. His short-term memory has been affected by the accident, but his overall recovery is looking good.

Justin underwent a second operation on Monday, March 31, to reinsert the missing piece of his skull. In the future, he should not need any other procedures.

Albright has few complications after his accident.

“Justin will spend the next year in physical therapy and rehabilitation, but eventually he will return to what he wants to do. He will be a soldier,” Dr. Hersonskey said.

Justin plans to return to the Marines as a recruiting assistant once he is physically able. He originally planned to work as a vehicle repairer fixing Hummers, but he will not be able to perform that task as soon as he hoped.

“We're very grateful to the doctors and staff,” Albright says. “They always explained everything and told me exactly what happened during the operations. I'm just happy that I'll be able to return to the military, something I've wanted to do since I was a kid.”
