A large weapons stockpile, which contained nine separate caches and thousands of pieces of weaponry, was uncovered last week by Marines operating in Anbar province.

On Tuesday, Marines with the 2nd Battalion 24th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1 uncovered the caches in an area north of Habbaniyah, according to a Multi-National Corps-Iraq news release.

The find included more than 29,000 small-arms rounds, 170 mortar rounds and assorted fuses, 104 artillery rounds, 47 grenades, 86 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, 15 anti-personnel and tank mines and two SA-7 surface-to-air missiles, the release stated.

Maj. Matthew Reid, operations officer for the Regimental Combat Team 1, said the discovery was the result of a close working relationship with local citizens.

“Numerous (reservist) Marines in the battalion are law enforcement officials,” Reid said. “They know how to work the streets.”

Also found at the sites were several compressed-gas cylinders, 10 pounds of high explosives and an assortment of detonation cords, triggering devices, electrical blasting caps, fuses, primers and several cell phones.

The sites also contained more than 35 rockets, rocket launchers, igniters, propellants and several AK-47s with magazines and a 50-caliber machine gun.
