TOKYO — The U.S. military in Japan said Friday it will lift restrictions on off-base alcohol consumption by uniformed service personnel stationed in Okinawa, at the Iwakuni base and at Camp Fuji, effective noon Monday.

“The lifting of the alcohol restriction can and will be reconsidered if future incidents/events indicate that such action is warranted,” the U.S. military said in a press release.

The U.S. military also said that a midnight-to-5 a.m. curfew remains in force for all U.S. service personnel in the southernmost island prefecture. The curfew was initially imposed after a junior high school girl accused a Marine of rape in February.

An all-day curfew was imposed Feb. 20 on all U.S. military service personnel, civilian workers and their families, but it was shortened to 10 p.m.-5 a.m. on March 3 and eased to cover only service personnel. It was shortened again to the current hours earlier this month.
