Good advice, no matter what. It always amazes me on the show "Cops" how people screw themselves. "Do you mind if we search your car?" Perp, knowing he has 500 lbs of marijuana, "No, go ahead!" Does he think they are going to miss it? The rules about search are just too true to ignore. Never let the cops in your house or car, no matter how innocent you think you are! And keeping your pie hole shut is just common(?) sense! Cooperate, but don't do their job for them!

Police are trained to watch you and react to you. They know that you are nervous and scared and many people look to the areas that they don't want the police to search. Do not react to the search and do not answer any questions. LOOK DOWN AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!!

Or, if you really are "innocent" and wrongfully arrested as this article assumes so many people are, you wouldn't have any places that you're afraid of the cops searching! If you have something to hide, you're not innocent.

I agree that cops sometimes overstep their bounds, but this article is basically telling people how to not get caught doing something illegal.

Scenario: You're carrying your backpack down the street. Your backpack is full of porno mags, lube, and dildo's. You get stopped for J-Walking. The Police Officer asks to search your bag and you refuse. Does that mean you're not innocent? No, it just means you don't want to be embarrassed.

It's a far fetched story, but supports the idea that everyone who refuses a voluntary search isn't a crook.

Man, some people are really dopey with the advice.

The police do not have to have a reason to talk to you any more than you have to have a reason to talk to anyone else.

However, if they do have a reason (such as investigating you for something), most places I know of require you by law to answer what are called "administrative questions." These are name, address, date of birth, etc. Also, most places REQUIRE that information be truthful. Lie or refuse to answer at your peril. Most judges I knew would deny bail to anyone refusing to ID themselves until their identity could be confirmed.

Most places do not require you to produce written ID to a police officer (except when driving), but they do require you to truthfully identify yourself verbally during an investigatory contact.

I would agree 100% with advice # 2 and #3. Those are the only items completely correct. Also note that it is Constitutionally legal for the police to chase you if you run from them for no apparent reason except their mere presence (See US Supreme Court, People of Michigan v. Chesternut).

And I never had to Taser anyone to make them look like a criminal. They usually managed to do it all by themselves. Oh wait, they didn't allow Tasers in Michigan at the time. Darn, look at all of the potential criminals I missed arresting.

Also note that it is Constitutionally legal for the police to chase you if you run from them for no apparent reason except their mere presenceI once wheeled and ran from an Absaroka Grizz to avoid getting swatted from the saddle and chewed on but she didn't chase me far cuz the foremans horse was a spastic Appaloosa goin nowhere fast. I've wondered a 1000 times what woulda happened if i had remained static and stared the sow down, if she would have picked on me instead, but i was sceered to do so hehehehehttp://www.leatherneck.com/forums/images/icons/icon11.gif

jet, where do you come up with this ****??? It seems that you look for the bad in anything that has to do with law enforcement. I am sure there are some self-employed ego maniacs out there also.

SEMPER FI,

OLE SARG, I am also sure that those like that out there too, however, they don't generally have the authority to abuse people physically who talk to them and have the capability to get away with it:usmc:
