I guess I am getting out of the DEP, I was selected for the 4-year NROTC Marine Option Scholarship. I'm stoked about it but I really wanted the title now...almost tempted to turn it down and become a Marine now. But I know its a great opportunity...got any advice for me Devil Dogs? Would I be a complete idiot to turn down the scholarship? Thank you.

Accept the scholarship. Having the desire to be a Marine is great! Join the reserves, become a Marine and enjoy college! You can have both!

Ha yeah I know that what everyone says but damn I honestly am aprehensive about being a Officer, not only to I not enjoy school but from the outside it just seems like a lot of responsibility and just getting there (OCS, TBS) looks extremely hard.
Ssgt, that what I originaly wanted to do, I'm being pulled out of the DEP as a Reservist. I wish so much that I could do that but there just seems no way that I can go through IADT and go through the NROTC program. At least thats what my XO and NCOIC say.

The best thing you can do for the Corp and yourself is NROTC. Training is like a sport, you work hard but when you win the game its all worth it! In life you have to set goals and achieve them no matter how hard or far away they may be. Life is short go … be a player! I didn’t go to college until after I got out of the Marines and I can tell you in a second I would go back as an officer. I work in corporate America and I can tell you that my best memories are with the Marines! Create you memories…go for it!

Good Luck

Yes sir, I agree. I am trying to swallow the hard pill of going straight to school. Most Marines I've talked to said that they would go back in as an officer. The thing is that they have been able to have the enlisted side of the it too. I guess I always had a kind of disdain for the kids that would only enter the military as an officer...as if they were to good, elitism or wouldnt be at that low level..then it turns out that I've been selected t be one of them haha. It seems that God and the Corps have different plans for me than what I wanted.

Many officers, even today are great friends of mine! Without the help of one young 2ndLt, I would have never gone to college. To this day, I thank him! Serving your country and your fellow Marines is an honor. It can take on many forms but taking this opportunity can allow you to help many others in the future.

Let me leave you with this - "When in doubt, attack" Don’t let uncertainty control your destiny. Take charge and move forward!

Good Luck - take the opportunity!

You say it looks extremely hard and you are absolutely correct. When is the last time you got something that was worth having that wasn't hard??? Take the scholarship! Keep your eye on the prize. You will do fine.

Marines strive to be the best that they can be. We can expect no less from you Poolees. You should push as hard and direct as you can otherwise you will always be wondering if you should have done more. Do your best and F*ck the rest.

Oh I don't mind being a town idiot :) j/k
Just one of my fears is that as an officer I wont be able to truly with the men..I know that the enlisted vs. officer side are completely different ball games and I'm not sure which is right for me. At least I have options huh?

Well can you take the scholarship and then still go enlisted? If so then do the enlisted thing for a while and then become an officer if it suits you.

Corporal, I can take the scholarship and go enlisted if I then drop the scholarship. The main problem is once I say no to the scholarship I loose it and would have to re apply later on if I wanted it. Whats the chances that I get it again?

You most likely won't get the open offer for the scholarship again! I know this is a life-altering decision but ask the questions you need to ask to make an educated decision. They won't offer the scholarship again, these are usually a once in a lifetime deal!

For them to even offer this chance to you, someone had to evaluate you on a high scrutiny level and say, "This is a guy who would do well in the NROTC program who probably deserves it more so than anyone I have seen." Have you thought about that? Have more faith in yourself that you can do this and have a great career and claim the title that of a Marine Corps Commissioned Officer!! Not many people can say that in the entire world...not many at all!!! Investigate your fears so they can be settled...ask those questions and get all the information you can!! Good luck!!

Yeah I know it's seems such a logical decision. I am excited for it and for the opportunity to claim the title of Marine and Officer, just not excited for the school part lol! Does anyone know what the NROTC Marine Program is like?
