I would like to hear from all Marines and poolees.

Marines: Your PFT/IST score before boot camp and your PFT score at the end of boot camp.

Poolees: Your current PFT/IST score right now.

This would help me and other poolees see how much you truly improve after a solid 3 months of hard work. Thanks!

Remember your IST doesn't mean anything- train for the PFT. You'll only run 1.5 miles when you first get to boot camp- that doesn't happen as you progress. The PT runs keep getting longer until you get in the fleet- then they level out.

My final PFT in boot camp wasn't spectacular. I was recovering from a concussion and got stitches out of my head the day of the PFT (that I had to run with a different company) I maxed the pull ups and sit ups, but my run time was the worst time I had in my Marine Corps career. Could be because I spent a good amount of time throwing up and being dizzy.

Kind of makes me feel like i have not been putting out :(

I DEP'ed in 20080313 so I've only had roughly 30 days to get ready to go.
I am a tall and skinny guy (6'2, 173lbs) but not active very much anymore until recently haha.

anyways, when i first started preparing:

pull-ups: 2
crunches: 35
and I was not able to do the 1.5 mile without stopping.

As of last week i am currently:

pull-ups: 7
crunches: 60
1.5 mile: 11:35 (dont have to stop anymore, haha!)

I ship out in a couple days (20080414), so I am fairly happy with my progress.

My IST was 22 pullups, 9 something run, and 100+ crunches. My final PFT was a 259 or something like that...I actually worsened...not enough PT in bootcamp...On a practice PFT the other day I ran a 20:30 and maxed out in pullups and crunches...so I got a 285. The fleet will build you up SOOOO fast.

NCard0za, you've made good progress. You'll continue to get better at boot camp. As long as you put 100 percent effort into everything you'll be OK. The DIs may abuse you for it, but they will get you for something no matter what. Just look at it as a chance to get better.

What are the PFT scores based on?

SEANstaah
04-22-08, 11:30 PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps_Physical_Fitness_Test

pull ups, crunches, 3 mile run time.

Marine Corps PFTs are scored the following way for males: five points for every pull-up, one point for every crunch, and one point is deducted from 100 for every 10 seconds slower than 18 minutes. For females, about 1.5 points is given per second and one point is deducted from a hundred for every 10 seconds slower than 21 minutes on the 3-mile run. Crunches are scored the same way as males. A male or female Marine must score a total of 135 points between the three events to pass the PFT.

MotivatorOfTheGuard
04-22-08, 11:31 PM
You're ability to pass each event. You are graded on how well you do them ie. how fast your runtime was, how many pullups out of twenty you can do, and how many crunches out of 100 you can do. Your score is based off those numbers, and then added up to find your final score.

My run sucks right now but its getting there. i went from a 12 minute 1 miler down to a 5:59 minute mile. I just can't sustain that speed for 2 more miles. I end up slowing down to around a 7:30 pace for the last two. Just takes more training.

Also my crunches suck. I just hate doing them, lol. but again, they have to be done so I'm getting there.

Poolees, how are your IST scores compared with your fellow poolees in your area? From what I've seen on this site so far, you guys here are a lot more in-shape than most of the poolees in my area. It's pretty bad, but it's not common to see poolees from my area crank out more than 10 or 12 pull-ups and 60 crunches. The run isn't much different.

I just thought of a different theory.. maybe my area isn't out of shape, but only poolees on this site with good scores are responding to the question. Hmm...

That's a really good improvement..

I think with crunches, it's really about 70 or 80 percent technique and timing. Some of my fellow poolees can only do like 30 or 40.. which means they're either obscenely out of shape or doing them with bad form. I was stuck around 70 for the longest time, now I can almost always do 90-100. I also think a lot of it is the person holding your legs. If the person half-asses it and doesn't really keep your legs still you waste a lot of energy that way.

ye that is true.... I can do still do 90+ with people who have no idea what they are doing and I also feel a hell of alot more tired then I do when there is someone who knows what there doing I could proble do 120 but I dont really push myself I just get them done and move on to the pull ups

2 months is plenty of time to improve. Your sit ups and run are decent.. but your pull ups are lacking. For the pull ups, I'd check out the Armstrong program. I've not actually tried it myself but it seems like a solid routine. It's supposed to improve your pullups by at least 8-10 in 4-6 weeks so if you start now and work hard you should definitely get better by the time you ship. You can find the Armstrong program here http://www.4mcd.usmc.mil/AOP/OSOHyattsville/Armstrong%20Pullup%20Program.htm

I could only do three!

before I shipped I got to 15. The Armstrong program and losing wieght helped with that.

You have to run/bicycle/ellyptical SOMETHING AND do pushups/pull ups with some weight training. YOU ARE NOT BULKING.

I also think a lot of it is the person holding your legs. If the person half-asses it and doesn't really keep your legs still you waste a lot of energy that way.

Now, I am not a man who would place the blame for his shortcomings on someone else, however, that is a damn fine point and I've ALWAYS stressed this since I've came in (besides, I can say this, I've not once gotten less than 100) If you have a lazy piece of **** holding your legs that's more worried about relaxing and sitting on his ass for a minute or two, you'll expend much more energy.

You really have to let the person holding your legs know what they're doing wrong. You don't have much time at that point, of course, but you still have to let them know. It could be the difference between (Lord I hope not this) pass or fail, or even worse, 99 and 100 (you'll catch hell for that).

Pull ups - 14
Crunches -54

I havn't worked on the crunches at all yet, well not counting this last week. So I'm putting alot of focus in that area. I was a very avid smoker, smoked a pack or more a day for the last 3 years. I quit cold turkey last Sunday.

A month ago I had to force myself to even be able to run a half mile. On my workout today, I did a 2.5 mile run in about 20 minutes at a moderate pace.. I had plenty left to give.. I could have sprinted the last 1/4 mile to up my time, but I wasn't going to time.

When I ran the IST yesterday and got that 10:24 I started sprinting about 300 yards from finish, but I still had a ways I could have kept up my sprinting pace when I crossed the line.. So I think next time I'll start pushing myself at about 500 yards I should be able to knock it down to a 10:00 flat.. I'm going to retest on Wednesday and see if I produce any better results.. also my IST was done with no sleep the night before.. So I'll post my new results later this week.

My latest IST:

10 Pull-Ups
119 Sit-ups
1.5 mile- 10:55

But just two weeks before that:
7 Pull-ups
114 Sit-Ups
1.5 mile- 10:14

The reason for the slower time in running was because its beginning to get really cold and i was wearing more clothing than needed.

Before: 34:00, 20 second flexed arm hang, 70 crunches
Now: 27:36, 65 second flexed arm hang, 119 crunches.

That's what happens when you use square away time to do pull ups and sit ups.

Sit ups: 75
Run: 11:45

Now:
Pull ups: 17
Sit ups: 118

Recruiter tells me that as of now I would be competitive for officers selection board, but I hope to get as close as possible if not at 300 by the time I meet up with my OSO and start my package.

wooow what kind of workout were you doing? Thats a HUGE improvement.
