This seems like a really simple question, but I've never seen it asked or answered here, so I'll go ahead and ask.
In what situations during recruit training do you say "Yes Sir", and what situations do you say "Aye Sir" to your drill instructors? Or is there even a difference?

Aye Aye sir = this recruit understands and will carry out the command
Yes sir = this recruit is responding his answer to a QUESTION.......
so yes, there is a difference.

You'll figure it out once you get there. but that's the gist of it.

Remember its not: Aye, sir.
It's Aye Aye, sir. You aren't singing it either.
Quick, Crisp, Motivated.
2 distinct Aye's
1 Sir.
Oh and the comma doesn't mean pause like you got confused.

It really all depends on the platoon you're in. I never said "Aye Aye" when I was in boot camp.
Like someone said before, you'll get the gist of it. Its nothing to lose sleep over. Trust me, you're DI's are going to break you down and build you back up to exactly what they want you to be.

I never said Aye Aye either Score. It may be a platoon or a west coast thing, but we always responded with Aye sir, and still do. I don't think I have ever said Aye Aye sir.

You sir, are WRONG!
It depends on where you go to bootcamp. Hollywood Recruits say Aye, Aye, (much like the Navy), while P.I. Recruits say "Aye" like you'll actually hear in the fleet (sometimes).
I've never heard a Marine say Aye, Aye.

Take it easy, L/Cpl. He's not wrong.
This reply is a naval tradition and stands for "I understand, I will comply." We just shorten it because we're cool and the second Aye is automatically understood.

Well I was just going based on my experience, and how I was taught by my killhat (who was a PI Marine)
Never noticed any difference around any Marines since then nor has anybody until now ever pointed out to me otherwise.
You learn something new everyday in the Marine Corps.
He's not wrong.
I meant the part where he said "remember it's not Aye sir, it's Aye, Aye sir." His statement implied saying "Aye sir" is wrong, even though that is what is taught at P.I.
What he said may not be wrong for West Coast recruits, but he obviously has no idea that things are done differently at the other depot.

With all due respect L/Cpl. I only came to that conclusion because of who it came from as I have stated.
I understand that, kbs. I've met Marines at MOS school fresh out of bootcamp that thought the same thing. It's just SD/PI training differences. I just wanted to clear it up so that the OP wouldn't be confused whenever he hit the footprints.

Actually, you are both correct, in a way! The proper response is "AYE AYE SIR", However if you remember while in Boot Camp, everthing is RUSH, RUSH, RUSH, and that particular answer comes out sounding like "AYE SIR". If you don't believe it, say it slow, then speed up until you say it like your DIs wanted you to.......see it sounds like you're say it with one "AYE"! After a while we just automatically say "AYE SIR" ! Any of you Marines just need to ask a Drill Instructor! I think we have one lurking around the site from time to time.
Now, my fellow Marines, lets put this to bed and forget it, ok?

thats nasty hollywood **** Paris Island says aye sir.

I'm with Woody and Jonny, I rarely said "Aye Aye sir", almost always I used, "yes sir". Not sure if it's a east coast, west coast thing either.
I agree with Dave about talking so Aye Aye sounding like one Aye....I really think it was one of the few personal choices we had? Some guys in our platoon used Aye often it seems, so used Yes sir.

In my time it was "Aye Aye sir" and "yes sir we used "Aye Aye sir" when we were running also.

I'm a Hollywood Marine. It was always "aye sir" as far as I can remember. I never noticed anyone say "aye aye sir". But it does'nt really matter, just say it fast.

We started saying it so fast that it sounded like we were saying "ice!"

Oh I really frakked up one afternoon on Parris Island. The Senior Drill Instructor asked me what seemed like a complicated question to my first phase recruit pea brain. Instead of replying "Yes, Sir" or "Aye Aye Sir", I replied, "Correct, Sir!"
"@$#%@%** I know I am correct!"
And that cost me about a pound of sweat. :(
Well for me atleast i know it was aye, sir and thats what i used. We had to anunciate if we made it sound like ICE the DI's response usually was ***** i didn't ask for ice its AYYEE SIR!!
they give you leeway these days i think with the whole aye sir or yes sir. i remember up until 3rd phase aye sir was an answer for everything and many jokes came from the DI's about it.
i.e. "you recruits are stupid, i ask you why your rack is f***ed up and you just say, aye sir. thats not an answer....but i let it go cause youre just stupid recruits".....of course that was a SDI talking, no kill hat would let it slip
and when you do get there its a quick snapped aye sir not ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeee siiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......you're not in the church choir
THAT AINT IT

if its a question its yes sir/ma'am.
if its an order its aye sir/ma'am.
i know what you mean whitey. everytime we would give aye ma'am as an answer when she asked why our trash was jacked up, one of my drill instructors would say if i knew aye ma'am id kill her.
I noticed it was much more frequent for the female recruits to say "Aye, sir/ma'am" to a question than the males. I actually made fun of them for this whenever we trained near each other (swim week, rappel tower, etc.).
Drill instructor to female recruit: "Have you rappelled yet, recruit?"
Recruit: "Aye, sir!!!"
Me: "LMAO (whenever the DI wasn't looking)
Drill instructor to female recruit: "Any of you need to go to the head?"
Recruit: "Aye, sir!!!"
Drill instructor to female recruit: "Are you ready to leave my island, recruit?"
Recruit: "Aye, sir!!!"
Okay, I'm really bored, and the N.O. Hornets game won't be on for another hour...
