Heroic Marines return home from violence

Given the recent bloodshed in Iraq, the 44 Marine Corps reservists attached to the 4th Marine Division who just returned home must feel fortunate.

These brave Marines left Iraq just as the violence escalated again, including fierce fighting between the Iraq Army and cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army in Basra.

Americans shouldn't be reassured by the cease-fire now in place in Basra, even if the Bush administration keeps insisting Iraq is more peaceful and stable.

The cease-fire was brokered by Iran through Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Al-Sadr has re-emerged as a powerful threat to the American-backed al-Maliki regime.

The Marines are returning home to familiar places, such as Springboro, Conneautville, Buffalo, N.Y., Ripley, N.Y., Warren, Ohio, and Kent, Ohio. They are eagerly anticipating home-cooked meals, including lasagna, prime rib, rice, beans and pork chops.
Perhaps in the coming days, their thoughts of war and constant danger will ease, and these men and women will be able to reclaim the rhythms of their lives, far away from the daily attacks.

These are the faces of the Iraq war.

Many of these soldiers and Marines have spent multiple tours in Iraq. The commitment voiced by Lance Cpl. Kyle Frawley, of Springboro, is typical of the fighting men. "If I had a chance to do it again, I would," he said. "In a minute."

You wish President Bush and members of his administration were so clear in their purpose. But the important thing now is that 44 Marines, who provided security for 7-ton convoy trucks, delivered ammunition and other equipment to different bases sprawled across Iraq, are home and safe today.

They are the fortunate, along with all of us.
