Marines conducting training exercises at Fort Pickett

BLACKSTONE, Va. (AP) - Officials at Fort Pickett say residents in the Blackstone area may see an increase in military activity over the next couple of weeks.
About 2,000 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit out of Camp LeJuene, N.C., began taking part in training exercises over the weekend.
Military officials say people who live in the area may hear artillery, mortar and other weapons fire as well as increased helicopter traffic. Some of the training will take place at night.
But local businesses won't see many of the Marines spending their money in the area, since most are restricted to base.
The Marine unit returned last June from a deployment to Africa and the Middle East.
