I am DEP'd into the reserves and awaiting my ship date in october. I have waited so long be allowed the opportunity to earn the title of Marine. I can't ship until October because that is the earliest slot open for the 1142 MOS which I am currently enlisted under. If I want to leave this summer for recruit training I would have to retake the ASVAB ( to get a better MM score) and switch to bulk fuel specialist. The thing is that when I enlisted I was suprised that I wanst going to be a bulk fuel specialist but an 1142 electrical repair specialist. When I protested about having is swithced up on me I suddenly heard how bulk fuel was not as desirable as electrical. I even talked to the XO ( whom I knew before from the NROTC scholarship which I was selected for) and he said that he thinks I would like the 1142 better. My cousin who just got off recruiter duty and is in Iraq said that the 1142 is better than bulk fuel. Thus I ask what is your oppinions of bulk fuel? Do you think its worth leaving for boot camp 3-4 months earlier to switch to an MOS im not as hot about? Thank you for your help devil dogs.

Thank you for the reply Lcpl. The reserve unit in Arizona does not have anything in the 0300 unfortunately or that would have been my first choice. I am a NROTC Scholarship nominee which is why I am going into the reserves..have you come across any of these two MOS's?

Bulk fuel is exactly what it sounds like you run the fuel farm. It sux from what i heard. BUT... the cutting score for that MOS is rediculously low im talking in the 1400's. Well if the unit your join has bulk fuel and utilities they will have HE ops there as well, might be an MOS to consider..

Yeah that pretty much the sense I've got about it. What do you mean by cutting score? Anything to say about the 1142?

Cutting score is an indicator of how easy it is to promote in an MOS. Low score= easy to promote. However, it is not important to you anyway since the score changes frequently and is cyclical. What may be low now may not be in 2 yrs when you're actually eligible to be promoted.

So wait a minute, did you originally want to be Bulk Fuel? lol. That MOS is AWESOME! Just kidding. But seriously, I'm a Bulk Fueler. And yes, you pretty much will be doing just what the name implies. It's not the most glamorous MOS, but it's not bad either. I wouldn't exactly say it's interesting, but if you're in the reserves it doesn't really matter if your job is that exciting because most of what you do at drill won't have anything to do with you MOS. The school for bulk fuel is only 6 weeks, so that's a good thing. It all depends on whether or not you really care about getting the other MOS too. There's nothing wrong with Bulk Fuel though. As we say: "Bulk Fuel...hey somebody's gotta do it."
While we're on the topic, I was wondering if there are any fellow Bulk Fuelers on the site? Semper Fi, Gas Grunts!

Well alot of the people that get re-MOS-ed out of here (2600 field) are sent to be bulk fuel specialists for some reason. We lose our TS clearance, and tons of time spent here at our school. And from what I heard, its is no fun at all being a bulk fuel specialist.

Well I guess it doesn't matter to much since it's the Reserves but i think i'd rather wait the extra 4 months to ship and go with the 1142. But doesnt look like I will even be going now since I was selected for the NROTC Marine Option Scholarship and they've left me with little choice but to go to school rather than come a Marine now...

if you want to smell like gas/jp5/desile go bulk fuel. If you want to learn how to repair equipment like generator and other thing go 1142. You said Bluk fule was not your first choices then go with 1142
