The Rome chapter of the Young Marines will have a familiar face lending support to the club today at the Rome-Floyd County Library.

R. Lee Ermey, a retired Marine sergeant and drill instructor and Golden Globe-nominated actor, will be on hand from 10 a.m. until noon today to help promote the Young Marines program, of which he is the national celebrity spokesman.

“When we sent out the invitation to him a while back, we didn’t even have our charter yet,” said James Moore, one of the organizers of the Rome chapter of the Young Marines. “We just got the call last week that he was going to be able to come down and be here. He will award us our official charter, present us with a Young Marines flag, and he’ll talk to people a little bit about the organization.”

Moore said he’s been encouraged by some of the response he’s heard to Rome starting a chapter of the Young Marines.

“We’ve had some parents and teachers really excited about being here for this,” Moore said. “And we’re all looking forward to having Lee Ermey here. He’s a good speaker and a good motivator, and it’s really timely that we have him here as we get this chapter started.”

Ermey joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961, and he spent two years as a drill instructor at the recruit depot in San Diego.

He served several tours of duty in the Far East, including more than a year in Vietnam.

Ermey may be best-known for his role as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in “Full Metal Jacket” in 1987, and some of his other movie credits include “Mississippi Burning,” “Dead Man Walking” and “Saving Silverman.” He has also lent his voice to animated shows such as “The Simpsons,” “Toy Story” and “Family Guy.”

The Young Marines is a youth education and service program that promotes character building and leadership. The organization has enrichment programs and teaches skills similar to scouting or ROTC programs.

The Young Marines is open to boys and girls from age 8 through seniors in high school.

Moore said the Rome chapter of the Young Marines will have a start-up meeting Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the library. He said on that day, parents could bring in applications that they have downloaded from the group’s Web site — www.romeyoungmarines.com.

The organization will have an orientation to explain the group to parents and prospective students.
