It was a rude wake-up call for a group of U.S. Marines trying to catch a nap Saturday afternoon.

A shower of stray bullets slightly wounded one dozing Marine and sent dozens more scrambling for their helmets and flak vests.

Cpl. Michael Werner, 21, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was grazed slightly on the forehead in the incident. But within half an hour, he was laughing and joking with fellow Marines about it.

Military doctors said Werner was lucky he received only a scratch.

"It was the greatest wound of all time," said Navy Lt. Jesse Davidson, who treated Werner and stood with him outside a Humvee where other Marines gathered to tell stories of recent near-misses. "It literally skipped off his skull."

The burst of gunfire that unexpectedly awakened Werner and roused other slumbering Marines at noon Saturday apparently was not directed at the troops from the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment based out of Camp Pendleton. Rather, it was part of either a celebration or nearby street fighting.
