Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation is 'Honoring Our Heroes'

Wed Mar 26, 8:48 PM ET

The Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation has announced its 2008 gala theme, "Honoring Our Heroes," to recognize the five U.S. Marines Corps Medal of Honor recipients who call California home.

Boone and Madeleine Pickens are Honorary Chairpersons for this year's event, with Major General Terry and Cathe Robling and Virginia Monday serving as Event Chairpersons. The formal affair will be held May 24 at the historic Commissioned Officers' Club at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The Medal of Honor recipients are John McGinty III (1966, Vietnam), Robert Modzrejewski (1966, Vietnam), Richard Pittmann (1966, Vietnam), James Swett (1943, WW II), and Jay Vargas (1968, Vietnam); four have confirmed they will attend.

Established by a joint resolution of Congress on July 12, 1862, the Medal of Honor is the United States' highest military award and is bestowed upon very few.

The FLHF is the support organization for the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum -- the Marine Corps only aviation museum. This is the group's third annual gala. In addition to the dinner and dance, there will be a live auction. Those wishing to make reservations or to donate to the event or the auction are encouraged to log in to www.flyingleathernecks.org for more information. Gala proceeds go directly to support the museum and its amazing collection of historic artifacts and aircraft.
