Here's the deal. I recently got injured doing some basic jujitsu for PT at one of our poolee meetings. I thought it was a broken rib, but thankfully I just got back from the doctor who diagnosed it as basically dislocated. The bad news is that it could be chronic in the sense that if I put a lot of stress on my chest (like jujitsu) it'll keep happening now that the cartilage has been weakened.

I'm currently signed up for infantry and it's really the only MOS I want, but if this does end up being a bit of a chronic thing I might have to change my MOS come time for me to reenlist. Thing is, I really really really REALLY don't want a desk-job-type MOS.

So, just in case it comes to this, what are some alternative MOS's that I can start thinking about that are non-combat but also not a desk job.

P.S. I don't want to drive for a living.

Did the doctor tape your chest? Ribs at your age should heal fairly fast...especially by September. I wouldn't start a worry trail until the sawbones says that the rib isn't healing. But there is a MOS thread in the Poolee Forum....pick one. But I wouldn't worry about MOS I would concentrate on healing and getting to boot camp and keep the same regime and schedule until told otherwise. If you have another follow up visit they will probally take X-Rays again and then you can go from there. Opines suck but September is really pretty far off.

I really hope it does heal right and there's no more problems, but the doctor did say that there's a possibility of it being chronic.

And I knew about the MOS list, I just wanted a personal firsthand opinion of the good non-combat, non-desk-job MOS's from Marines that've been there and seen them in action. I thought about reading about them at usmilitary.about.com, but the descriptions that they give are so dry that it makes even infantry sound bad.

Best thing you can do right now, is not push yourself too hard. Concentrate on getting healed up, because there aint going to be any time for that trash in Boot Camp! Make sure your recruiter knows, and that MEPS knows, you dont want to be booted for fraudulent enlistment for failure to disclose medical information! Integrity pup, Integrity!

I plan to tell my recruiter this Thursday (next poolee meeting). The doctor basically just said that I can't do any lifting or contact (yeah, that means no pushups or pullups. So ****ed...)

Anyway, if it does pop up during boot camp, depending on the pain level, I'll probably talk to the corpsman, but otherwise I'll push through it, and I'll finish up my enlistment promise in infantry (only thing I really want to do). But if it continues to be a factor through my first enlistment, I want an alternative to be thinking about because you can't really be having an infantryman with random spasms of pain, can you? Especially during combat.

First of all, all you need to do is notify MEP's of the issue, and once you get to bootcamp you'll spend a drowsy confused day doing medical stuff. They will ask "Who here has any medical problems within the past 3 years" or something along those lines, at that time, you let them know again. You won't be singled out or anything like that, you simply need to let them know so that its in your medical record. That way you don't get in trouble. Trust me its always better to cover your six. Also, right now you should be thinking about how to survive recruit training, not life as a grunt. Being a grunt is a way of life, not just a job. Take care of what you can now, and worry about the rest later when the time comes.

Thank you LCpl. But like you said, I was just trying to cover my six.

Anyway, won't my recruiter notify MEPS if I just tell him?

Listen, remember this pup, only YOU are in control of your career. Don't rely on the recruiters to do anything except to get you to MEP's. You'll find once you get there that you will be hard pressed to even locate your recruiter. Now is the time to step up to the plate and make sure that YOU take care of all of this stuff. You want to make sure that from here on out, the Marine Corps is what you make of it, including your mistakes. So eliminate a few by making sure you let everyone know who needs to know. Now get some sleep pup! I'm on duty right now and i can't sleep. You are so fortunate. Get it while you can!

By the way motivator, your quote in your profile is incorrect!

We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?

Poolee, Correct Yourself!
