Now we can answer your question. There are several hits if you do a search on combat engineer on this site or even google.
Covey_Rider is our resident expert, so you can look at his posts, too.
Basically, a combat engineer is involved with most everything having to do with troops moving on the ground or staying in a defensive position. If it's in the way, they'll dig under it, build a bridge over it, or blow it the heck up.
Just being a Marine is dangerous.

All i have heard is that a combat engineer just blows stuff up i haven't heard about building anything. I am more interested in blowing stuff rather than building it. What would you recommend?

You are not a BOTHER to us, but figure how many time we get asked the same questions! It's like kindergarden around here sometimes. The rules are in place for a reason, just like everything else in the Corps! Never feel like you are a bother, just listen to what we say and don't post any reply that might sound like you are being lazy or trying to debate or argue with us. We have answered your question, you just have to find it, that's all!

I appreciate that Dave, but i cannot except such a comment from such an outfrigginstanding NCO such as your self. Semper Fi Cpl!
Pup, you are not a bother, you just need to watch your attitude, watch what you say and who you say it to, and make sure you have taken all the appropriate measures to obtain the information. If you find it and can still not adequately answer the question, that is what we are here for! Just know that we do not want to answer the same question 20 times a week! Carry on pup!

I have another question, when i turn 19 can i transfer from combat engineer to MP? Or how does that work?
MotivatorOfTheGuard
03-28-08, 01:16 PM
What does your age have to do with it? You make a Lat move when you re-enlist. Not based on your birthdays!
rvillac2

Transferring into another primary MOS:
Does not happen often
If it happens, it's after your first enlistment contract is up
Is entirely based on the needs of the Corps.
There have been cases where Marines are temporarily assigned to the PMO. This is usually to serve as post security. You would receive hasty training or on the job training and then put on duty. The times that I've heard or read about this happening was during other wars and not this one.
Another MP duty is convoy security, which actually can be done with any set of Marines. Once again, you might be loaned to another unit as extra manpower and do this type of mission.
As far as doing actual law enforcement/investigations full time, you would have to get the primary MOS at some point.

My recruiter said that i have to be 19 to make my MOS MP. And then he said i can put in a transfer request when i am 19 to be a MP and more than likely i would get the job.
MotivatorOfTheGuard
03-28-08, 01:33 PM
For that to happen, your recruiter wasn't entirely correct. First of all, you have to have two years time on station where ever you are stationed at. Secondly, your MOS monitor has to release you from your MOS and not to mention your package has to be approved by HQMC. If your MOS is critical, you will not be released.

You have to be well over 18 to enlist as MP. You MUST be 19 before you complete your MOS school.
MotivatorOfTheGuard
03-28-08, 03:00 PM
If MP is what you really want, tell your recruiter that. Also tell him that you will postpone your ship date in order to get that MOS seat. Be firm, he CAN make it happen. Ask him to talk to other districts to see if they have any extra seats.

I worked as an MP for 6 months. If you have the wrong attitude. Everything sucks. However, if you remember why you do it, do it right, and have fun doing it, it is truly a blast! There aint no rush like running code 3 baby.

Its not like sitting in a patrol car all day? I have heard that there are two types of MP one is basically infantry and that other stays on base. what is the on base MP like?
Covey_Rider
03-29-08, 09:18 PM
To be honest I don't like MP's at all. To me most of them power trip and are always out to burn Marines. Now if they actually took their power to aid Marines and correct them when needed instead of going overboard all the time then I wouldn't mind them. For instance...last night one of my Marines almost got into a fight at the palms so we were taking him home and some guy came up behind him and grabbed him...well my Marine out of instinct turned and hit him. Now my Marine got taken down by 6 MPs and they started going ballistic on him. Now PMO is going to be getting a phone call because they cracked open my Marines head and he had to get staples. They not only took him down but they went completely overboard once he was on the ground. He was taken down face down but it was the back of his head that needed staples....
