I don`t know where I have been but I just heard that the Marine Corp uses a Marines ss number instead of a service number, When did this happen and why? Used to be able to tell when someone joined by looking at their service number. I signed up in May 1954 and my service number was 1485912. Old salts at that time had numbers that started with 09***** & 10*****.

Dropping service numbers in lieu of using Social Security Numbers (SSN) was just another bad idea. In boot camp (1978) we were required to have our mailing address include our SSN on the OUTSIDE of every piece of mail. In addition and speaking from personal experience in recruiting, we were required to place our SSN on every document of everyone we enlisted or processed. There are thousands of Marines out there with copies of their enlistment documents that contain my name, rank, and SSN.

Hmmm, in '65, my service number was 21xxxxx.

I went through with Marines with the same time in service, with 20xxxxx and 22xxxxx.

I think a lot of it depended on where you came from, East, West, North or South.

I actually have a good friend from Waco, Texas, and he was a 209xxxx. Enlisted 2 weeks after me and lived ~300 miles North.

My Buddy, that I enlisted with, went to Boot together, was over 500 numbers in sequence higher than me.

Go figure.

As far as the SSN's go, identity theft would scare the hell out of me.
