I was reading the post a few posts down called "time frame" and I have a question that goes along with that, but for some reason im not allowed to reply to that message. Hmm.. i'm not sure. so here is the question.
I read that you are avaliable for promotion (Pvt. - Cpl.) every 8 months correct? well I was wondering if you are eligable to become promoted, and fail to do so, is there any other way to get promoted? or would you have to wait the extra 8 months in order to be avaliable again for promotion?
again, sorry for having to make a completley different thread!
oh and just an update for those of you who care
over the last 3 weeks my mile time has decreased from 10:00 flat to 9:13.
so I am well into my way of making it to MEPS as soon as i can drop about 14 more lbs. (ill keep everybody posted)

Only Marines can reply to threads in Ask A Marine. You would have known that if you read "Read This Before Posting."

You read wrong. Promotion to PFC and L/Cpl are the only ones that simply require time in grade. Promotion to Corporal and beyond is whenever you make the cutting score. The only ways to get promoted are to make score or earn it meritoriously. Meritorious promotions are rare and competitive.

My mistake Sgt. thank you for the correction.
So now I am even more confused I am sad to say. Are you saying that a Pvt. can be promoted to PFC. in eight months time while looking and acting like a ass the eitire time? (Pardon the refrence please.) and then when he becomes a L/Cpl. 2 years later and he still doesnt get it he suddenly cannot advance?
Kind of reminds me of California's "No Child Left Behind" law.
or am I getting totall the wrong impression of your post?
***Please do not be offended by anything I have said in this post because when I was refering to a sloppy looking/acting Marine, It was Hypothetical and was not directed at anybody. Thank You***

They require time in grade, ONLY.
Nothing is given to you.
If you ain't E-4 by 2 years, consider a new career.

Non-rates are eligible for promotion, but their CO's can block it if they wish. If a Marine is a sh_tbird, that will be shown in their evaluations (Conduct and proficiency ratings). Also, if someone gets disciplined a lot, their promotion to PFC and L/Cpl can be blocked, too.
Some sh_tbirds slip through the cracks in our system, but nobody really skates by without their peers knowing about them. We don't give the rank away for free.

Thank You, for your input Sgt.
I know a Marine that got non-rec'd for promotion from PFC to LCpl. It's rare that there is a Marine so ****ty that this happens to, but it does happen.
