CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Two Fort Campbell soldiers and a JROTC teacher are being credited with saving a teenager’s life after he was hit by a car on his way to school.

Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools spokeswoman Elise Shelton says 15-year-old Joshua Castle was taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville on Tuesday.

Officials say emergency surgery saved Castle’s leg, but he may not have made it to the hospital alive without the actions of passers-by.

The Leaf-Chronicle reports that Command Sgt. Maj. Stephen D. Blake took off his belt and made a tourniquet around Joshua’s leg.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Mapel arrived and provided another belt and checked the teenager’s vitals.

Maj. Daniel Runyon, the JROTC teacher at Northwest High, also applied pressure to Joshua’s arteries.
