in remarks section on dd214 on my discharge it says good conduct medal period commences : 840316 any idea what this means? (http://www.marinesforever.com/answers/index.cfm?action=a&qid=8)
When were you in? Are you still in? This looks like a Date stamp for March 16, 1984 (unless you are MUCH older), Just kidding, but that's what it looks like to me. If you are still in, then I would talk to your admin people and they could explain it.

no that was that date i was discharged. just wondering why it said commencing if i was discharged. i was in from 81 to 84
Did you get in trouble at anytime while you were in? If you did it resets your Good Conduct clock, depending on when it happened. But it does seem weird that they would start it from when you got out. Maybe it is a typo.

Generally that would mean when your GCM period commences, now if you served three years then you rate one GCM and the next one commences on 840316. You must have either been issued one on that day or it was a typo! Do you show a GCM on your DD214? What was your date of entry on active duty? Figure that plus three years and that should tell you. If you did serve three years and it ain't on your 214 (provided you were a good boy) you can request an update to your records thru channels, check with a recruiter for the address or the VA.
DavBlay,
Good call, I didn't think about that.

there was allot of stuff happening when i was in. like another marine that stayed in the same room as me busted my nose so he could get out quicker.
then.my company or Bn tried to change a document to read marijuana in stead of opiate. witch was in Tylenol 3. Witch were proscribed bye the base hospital. and i never got any counseling about it. i ended up in the physic ward. And was recommend for a administrative discharge. then they
kept postponing it. saying it would be there soon and it never happened.
then i went home on a weekend swoop and got stranded. with no money
and did not want to go back to that kind of treatment. by the time i came to my sense had been U A for 30 day.

Then that is the correct date that you GCM period commences! That's in case you would have went active duty in another branch of service. It don't mean nothing now!
