Marines set date for spring uniform change

ARLINGTON, Va. — One of the first signs of spring this year will be the sight of Marines in their desert camouflage uniforms.
“Effective immediately, the Marine Corps seasonal uniform change while in garrison will occur worldwide in synchronization with the change to, and from Daylight Savings Time (DST) in the United States,” Corps Commandant Gen. James Conway said in a recent Corpswide message.
Marines downrange are not affected by the move.
The change applies to Marines where the utility uniform is designated as the uniform of the day in garrison by local commanders.
The Corps announced in July that the winter uniform for such Marines is the woodland green camouflage uniform with the sleeves down, and the summer uniform is the desert camouflage uniform with the sleeves rolled up.
Conway’s recent message establishes that the change in uniforms will occur on the duty day following the time changes in the United States.
Commands in “extreme seasonal conditions,” such as Alaska, can apply for waivers to the uniform change policy on a case-by-case basis, the message said.
Conway’s message also gives local commanders some leeway on when Marines roll up their sleeves.
“In recognition of the possibility of temperature extremes within the first few weeks after changing to/from DST, commanders may direct a deviation to the MCUU [Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform] sleeves up/down policy as climatic conditions warrant,” the message said. “Such deviations will be temporary and apply uniformly across the command.”
Reserve Marines and sailors preparing to deploy or returning from a deployment also have some wiggle room, the message said.
They can wear the uniform “suitable to the theatre of operations, regardless of the season,” meaning they could end up wearing the desert camouflage uniform in winter, the message said.
“In such situations, commanders may direct that sleeves be worn up or down in correlation to the impending climate change vice the seasonal uniform they are wearing (e.g., Reservists may be wearing the desert MARPAT [Marine Pattern] MCUU with sleeves rolled down,” the message said.
