Dougherty County -- A program to build 110 new housing units for the Marines at the Albany Marine Corps Logistics Base gets underway next week.

Demolition of one group of housing units will start Tuesday. Private contractors have been hired to do the demolition and the construction. There are currently 250 housing units on the base, with only 100 occupied.

The plan is for 100 units to be demolished, and then 110 new larger units to be built.
MCLB Public Affairs Officer Lt. Caleb Eames said the plan is "Very important to provide adequate standard of living. The new houses will be quite a big larger, and will be able to compete with the housing that your average Marine is going to be able to find out in the
community."

When all the new housing units are completed, the Marines will then move into them, and they hope that will be in about one year.
