If you drive into Cape Coral on Veterans Parkway, you may have noticed the electronic sign that honors the military, near the Iwo Jima monument at Four Mile Cove Eco Park.

You may also have noticed a name on that sign: Marine Cpl. Timothy Smith.

The John C. Hinks Memorial Sign was built to honor those from Cape Coral who have served or are serving in the U.S. military. Smith's name is the first to appear on the sign.

And he noticed, said his father and Cape Coral resident Daniel Smith.

"He was pretty impressed," said his father, who also served as a Marine, as did another son. "We are pretty proud of him."

Timothy Smith was recently in Cape Coral on a short leave after a term in Iraq. He returned to his base Friday in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Smith has served in the Marines for three years. While near Fallujah, Iraq, he escorted convoys from location to location. During his work there, he received military accommodations from the Navy and Marines, his father said.

"We were constantly worrying about him," said Daniel Smith, who moved to the Cape two years ago from Michigan. "Actually we were kind of shocked when he joined the service. He was studying to be a pediatrician."

Daniel Smith said he noticed the sign, which was constructed late last year, and thought it would be a nice surprise for his son. "I phoned the city, they put me in touch with Parks and Rec and we got his name on the sign," he said.

While he was home, an area program treated him to a stay on Fort Myers Beach.

Cpl. Smith's term of service will be over in January. After that, he hopes to join Cape Coral's police force.

The memorial sign was donated by local businessman Don Hinks in honor of his late brother.

To be considered for a posting, a family member of a potential honoree must live in Cape Coral, the honoree must be a military person returning home for leave from active duty from a conflict or must have died in the line of duty.
