Survey says: Corps’ bow tie here to stay
About 60 percent of Marines opposed proposed change to evening dress jacket

ARLINGTON, Va. — More than half of Marines surveyed agree: Don’t change the evening dress uniform for staff noncommissioned officers.
In November, the Marine Corps announced it would conduct a survey in which all active, reserve, retired and former Marines could weigh in on a proposed change to the evening dress jacket for staff NCOs.
“The proposed modification eliminates the bow tie and gives the evening dress jacket a standing collar with an open silhouette to provide a distinctive Marine Corps appearance apart from other services,” a Corps news release from November said. The change to the uniform would have cost Marines an extra $50.
But of the 20,475 Marines who participated in the online survey, about 60 percent voted against changing the uniform, said Corps spokeswoman Staff Sgt. Christina Delai.
Based on the results, the sergeant major of the Marine Corps recommended against adopting the proposed change to the commandant, and the commandant agreed, Delai said Monday.
For the past several years, the Corps has conducted surveys for new personal items being issued to Marines, said Mary Boyt, of the Marine Corps Uniform Board. These are items that Marines own themselves instead of checking out of supply.
“We did it for female uniforms the SNCO [staff NCO] evening dress uniform, the Marine Corps running suit, [and] the combat utility uniform, to name a few,” Boyt said in an e-mailed response to questions.
The Corps has done such surveys since technology permitted.
The Uniform Board also solicits input from the 18 major commands on issues it is considering, such as uniform regulations and grooming standards, Boyt said.
“Some commands respond back with the command consensus, however many respond back with individual votes (e.g. 2,000 concur; 1,500 nonconcur with the recommendation),” she said.
